Apple’s Ambitious Self-Driving Car Project Loses 3 Engineers – $AAPL

By John F. Heerdink, Jr.

As per reports, Apple’s (AAPL) self-driving car project has lost three key engineers in recent weeks adding to the list of departures at the iPhone maker’s ambitious car project.

Recently, Apple’s chief engineer for radar systems on the project, Eric Rogers joined flying-taxi startup Joby Aviation Inc. Its engineering manager for the team’s battery systems group, Alex Clarabut, and hardware engineering manager, Stephen Spiteri joined Archer Aviation Inc.

Apple’s seven-year-old project has been disturbed by frequent turnover and strategy shifts, along with rivals poaching its talent. Six members of the project’s management team this year left including its former head, Doug Field.  A key recent departure was Michael Schwekutsch leading the hardware engineering. Schwekutsch also joined Archer, where he joined as senior vice president. Other former employees have joined car startups such as Rivian Automotive Inc., an Irvine, California-based automaker.

Meanwhile, Apple has also made some key hires this year, including Urlich Kranz, who previously led self-driving car startup Canoo and electric vehicle development at BMW, and CJ Moore, a former self-driving software director at Tesla Inc.
