Disney & Scarlett Johansson Settle Dispute Over ‘Black Widow’ Movie

By John F. Heerdink, Jr.

As per reports, The Walt Disney Company (DIS) and actress, Scarlett Johansson jointly announced the settlement of their legal dispute arising from the release of the Marvel superhero movie “Black Widow.” The terms of the settlement between the parties remained undisclosed.

In July, Johansson accused Disney of breaching her contract when the company released the movie on its subscription streaming service Disney+ and in theatres at the same time. Resulting in the loss of her compensation, which she said was based in part on box office receipts from an exclusive run in cinemas. Disney reverted at the same time that there was “no merit” to the lawsuit and asserted that the studio had complied with all the terms of Johansson’s contract.

“I’m very pleased that we have been able to come to a mutual agreement with Scarlett Johansson regarding ‘Black Widow,” stated Alan Bergman, content chairman for Disney Studios.

“Black Widow,” released on July 9 in theatres and for a $30 charge on the platform, Disney+ earned more than $378 million in worldwide theater receipts, according to film tracking service Box Office Mojo. The release also generated about $60 million through streaming purchases in its first 20 days of release, Disney informed.
