Microsoft Announces Agreement For Acquisition Of San Francisco Security Software Maker RiskIQ

By John F. Heerdink, Jr.

Reportedly, Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) has agreed to acquire RiskIQ, a security software maker, expanding its products and protecting its customers amid a rising tide of global cyberattacks. The terms of the deal remained undisclosed. Founded in 2009, San Francisco-based RiskIQ deals in cloud software for detecting security threats and assisting clients to identify and understand where and how they can be attacked on complex webs of corporate networks and devices. According to the company’s website, its customers include BMW AG, Facebook Inc., American Express Co., and the U.S. Postal Service.

Microsoft has included security features to its products, including Azure cloud services and Windows to protect individual machines and detect attacks on networks. It has also added personnel to investigate Microsoft’s own products for any vulnerabilities, help clients clean up after a cyberattack, and run a lab called the Microsoft Threat Intelligence Center that works closely to track nation-state hackers.

Microsoft has acquired several companies to expand its security capabilities. Last month, Microsoft bought ReFirm Labs, a maker of technology to secure Internet of Things devices, for an undisclosed amount. Microsoft and the rest of the U.S. technology industry along with other companies and government agencies have been facing a series of damaging and widespread cyberattacks over the past eight months.
