Reportedly, Boeing’s (BA) MQ-25 Stingray drone successfully has refueled a U.S. Navy Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornet, marking it the first time an unmanned aircraft has refueled another plane pushing Boeing Stock higher. The F/A-18 pilot flew as close as 20 feet from the drone at operational speeds and altitudes.
The MQ-25 will be the Navy’s first carrier-based drone and must refuel everything from Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornets to F-35s. The MQ-25 to continue flight testing before heading to Norfolk, Va., for deck handling trials aboard a Navy carrier later this year. The drone took its first flight in 2019 and is expected to reach its initial operating capability in 2024. In 2018, the Navy awarded Boeing an initial $805 million for the drone but the overall program is expected to be worth billions.
