Intel Fails To Win Court Approval To Toss $2.18B VLSI Technology LLC Patent Verdict

By John F. Heerdink, Jr.

Reportedly, Intel Corporation (INTC) has failed to gain approval to throw out a $2.18 billion jury verdict that ordered the chipmaker to pay VLSI Technology LLC the amount for patent infringement. U.S. District Judge Alan Albright in Waco, Texas, denied Intel’s move for a new trial in a sealed order.

On March 2, Jurors awarded VLSI $1.5 billion and $675 million for Intel’s respective infringement of two patents that were once owned by Dutch chipmaker NXP Semiconductors NV. Intel expressed disappointment over the decision and intended to appeal. It also asked for reforms to prevent “litigation investors” from using low-quality patents to pull “exorbitant” damages, expressing the practice stifles innovation and hurts the economy.
