Intel’s Delayed 10-Nanometer Server Chips Are Reportedly On The Way for Q1 2021

By John F. Heerdink, Jr.

Reportedly, Intel Corporation (INTC) is soon going to launch a server chip in large volumes built with its best production technique in the first quarter. This is seen as an attempt to convince its customers that its manufacturing operations are recovering from long delays. The Xeon Scalable third generation of processors (codenamed Ice Lake) is under a “volume ramp” on Intel’s 10-nanometer production, the company informed.

Intel’s 10-nanometer production has been delayed by more than three years, giving rivals like Advanced Micro Devices Inc. an advantage over the market share. The company is also considering outsourcing some production.

“Today marks a significant milestone for Intel as we continue to accelerate the delivery of our 10-nanometer products and maintain an urgent focus on execution to deliver a predictable cadence of leadership products,”  Intel’s data center business is its most profitable unit. Xeon chips are the heart of giant server farms run by cloud providers such as Amazon.com Inc. and Google. They’re the biggest buyers of these semiconductors, which can cost as much as a small car. However, these customers have begun designing their own data center chips and often have Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. make the components. TSMC is ahead of Intel in production technology.” , stated Navin Shenoy, executive vice president, and general manager Intel’s Data Platforms Group.

Progression in semiconductor manufacturing is measured in billionths of a meter or nanometers with smaller and smaller transistors put onto silicon wafers and with each new and better iteration it helps the chipmakers create faster, efficient, and cheaper products.
