Intel Reveals Its Latest Chip Strategy & TSMC Partnerships

By John F. Heerdink, Jr.

Intel Corporation (INTC) is reportedly working to regain its footing in manufacturing to prevent further loss of its chip market share to rivals such as Advanced Micro Devices Inc and Nvidia Corp, who have faster offerings.  The giant chip revealed its turnaround strategy to source subcomponents of its chips from external factories, including its new specifics of partnerships with rival Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC).

Intel, known as the remaining semiconductor firm that designs and manufactures its chips, lost its lead in making the fastest chips to TSMC. Intel is preparing to tap rivals like TSMC for subcomponents of chips called “tiles” and stitching those together in Intel’s factories with packaging technology.

The company informed that its new “Ponte Vecchio” chip will use key tiles made with TMSC’s “N5” and “N7” chipmaking technologies, placed on top of an Intel-made base. It also informed that its “Alchemist” graphics chips will be made by TSMC using the latter’s newly named “N6” chipmaking technology, an upgraded version of its “N7” technology.  The “Ponte Vecchio” chip’s first major use will be in a supercomputer that Intel is building for the U.S. Department of Energy.

Intel Corporation (INTC) seeks to expand the boundaries of technology to provide the most amazing experience possible while designing, manufacturing, and selling integrated digital technology globally.
