Microsoft Introduces Kid-Friendly Version Of Its Edge Web Browser, Edge Kids Mode

By John F. Heerdink, Jr.

Microsoft (MSFT)  introduced its new kid’s mode for its Edge web browser, in a move to ensure that parents can easily allow their children to go online without being concerned about the kind of content they’ll come across. The introduction is the first such feature from any major browser, designed to prevent kids 12 and under from viewing sites and services their parents may find objectionable.

“For U.S. parents with children aged 12 and younger, 58% are concerned with the issues their children face when using digital products and services, and while the majority are aware of parental control solutions, only about half are actually using one today,”  stated Microsoft corporate vice president Liat Ben-Zur in a statement, citing internal research.

To view kids mode, parents need to launch Edge on their PC or Mac and select the kid’s mode button from the profile menu in the top right corner of the screen. Parents have the choice to choose from two versions of kids mode, one with kids ages 5 to 8, the other for kids 9 to 12. The version for the younger kids is a simplified version of the Edge browser with a kid-friendly look, while the version for older kids has those links to age-appropriate news sites.

Other tech giants like Google for instance, already offer a version of YouTube for children called YouTube Kids. Facebook has its own Messenger Kids service that allows kids under 13, the age limit to join Facebook and send messages to a list of contacts approved by their parents.

However, Edge simply isn’t as popular as Google’s Chrome browser. Chrome dominates the browser industry with 64% of the global market share, as per data. Edge covers just 3.45% of the global browser market share. Microsoft has designed Edge to run on the same open-source Chromium software that powers Chrome, to make Edge more appealing and to ensure that it is compatible with the millions of websites that have been designed specifically for Chrome.
