Microsoft Connects With Accenture, Goldman To Build Software To Produce Fewer Data Center Carbon Emissions

By John F. Heerdink, Jr.

Reportedly, Microsoft Corp., (MSFT) Accenture Plc, and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. have joined hands with nonprofits like the Linux Foundation and climate groups to develop ways to build software that produces fewer carbon emissions when used in data centers, preventing high-powered computers from consuming increasing amounts of the world’s electricity. Data centers are responsible for about 1% of global electricity demand, which is expected to increase to 3% to 8% in the next decade. Cloud-computing companies like Microsoft, Amazon.com Inc., and Google have announced goals for reducing the emissions output of their data centers, and many companies have announced carbon-neutral goals. Amid software applications growing more complex and processing-intensive, they require more computing power and electricity, calling for greater awareness of their carbon footprint.

The Green Software Foundation is looking to develop tools and create standards for measuring the climate impact of software. The foundation will additionally work on training software engineers who are interested to learn how to build programs that consume less energy.

However, it is tough to determine exactly how much carbon is being emitted by individual software programs. The Green Software Foundation metrics will help to determine how much electricity is needed, whether microprocessors are used efficiently, and the carbon emitted in networking. The foundation is looking forward to developing certifications that would give engineers expertise to specialize in green software development.
