World’s Largest Copper Producer Codelco Fast-Tracking Digitization With Microsoft

By John F. Heerdink, Jr.

As per reports, the world’s largest copper producer, Chile’s Codelco has struck a deal with tech giant Microsoft (MSFT) to fast-track the digitization of its sprawling mining operations, improving automation and analytics. The collaboration with Microsoft will improve the company’s capacity to make its production processes more efficient, traceable and promote “sustainability” within its operations.

“We are promoting profound changes so that different areas operate in a completely remote and automated way, reducing risks, improving productivity, safety and reliability of our operation,” stated company executive Alvaro Garcia.

Mining companies worldwide are working with plans to operate mines remotely, reducing the risk of accidents and boosting efficiency. However, the move towards automation has led to conflict with unions, who see the transition as a threat to their livelihoods. The project with Microsoft will also include a training component for the company’s workers.
