Apple CEO Tim Cook On Augmented Reality, Self-driving Cars & Retirement

By John F. Heerdink, Jr.

Apple (AAPL) CEO Tim Cook’s recent podcast interview with the New York Times discussed how artificial intelligence and augmented reality are significant for the company’s growth in the future. The CEO spoke on the company’s interest in autonomy and its underlying benefits for several products, and not just only cars.

Cook declined to comment on Apple launching a self-drive car, which the company is supposedly testing in California. But he did add,

“We love to integrate hardware, software, and services and find the intersection points of those because we think that’s where the magic occurs.”

Cook revealed how AR could be useful in the business world, including the education, health care, retail industries, and gaming in particular.

“I’m already seeing AR take off in some of these areas with the use of the phone,” Cook said. “And I think the promise is even greater in the future.”

Cook 60, spoke on his retirement plans stating that he doesn’t plan on leading Apple forever, adding that he is unlikely to be CEO in 10 years.

“But I can tell you that I feel great right now,” he said. “And the date’s not in sight. But 10 more years is a long time and probably not 10 more years.

“And so I don’t think I will know that until after I’m not here,” Cook said. “Because I think I’ll run so fast that I’ll never really think about it until I’m not running anymore.”
