Reportedly, Fast food giant McDonald’s Corporation (MCD) is planning to reduce the use of plastic in more than 1 billion Happy Meal children’s toys, it sells globally each year by the end of 2025. Toys will be made from plant-based or recycled plastics, allowing the company to reduce its use of virgin fossil fuel-based plastic for Happy Meals by 90% in comparison to the year 2018. For example, a plastic figurine of Batman will be swapped with a dozen cardboard pieces that kids can put together themselves.
McDonald’s started selling Happy Meals in 1979, shifted to more sustainable toys in the UK, Ireland, and France in 2018. In the United States, McDonald’s is already using some sustainable toys, including books and Pokemon collectible cards. The revamped Happy Meals will not cost franchisees more money, informed Amy Murray, vice president of global marketing enablement.
