J&J Suspends/Recalls Aerosol Sunscreens Over Presence Of Carcinogen In Some Sprays

Reportedly, Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) is voluntarily suspending all lots of five Aveeno and Neutrogena brand aerosol sunscreen products from the market after internal testing identified low levels of a cancer-causing chemical, benzene in some samples. Benzene is known as a human carcinogen, a substance that potentially causes cancer subject to the level and extent of exposure.

“While benzene is not an ingredient in any of our sunscreen products, it was detected in some samples of the impacted aerosol sunscreen finished products,”, “Daily exposure to benzene in these aerosol sunscreen products at the levels detected in our testing would not be expected to cause adverse health consequences.” the company said.

However, the company has decided to suspend all lots of the specific aerosol sunscreen products as a cautionary move. The list includes Neutrogena Cool Dry Sport, Neutrogena Beach Defense, Neutrogena Ultra Sheer, Neutrogena Invisible Daily defense, and Aveeno Protect + Refresh. The company has asked the consumers should stop using the affected products and discard them appropriately.
