Stocks Rebound Weekly Despite Banking System Woes – $AAPL $AMC $BEEM $BRQS $INM $INVO $NVDA $TSLA Rise!

By John F. Heerdink, Jr.
Quote of the Day:  “Patience is a virtue, and I’m learning patience. It’s a tough lesson.” – Elon Musk

Happy Saturday!

I hope that you had an amazing week.

As for the broad markets this week, stocks saw increased volatility, but rose over the last 5-days after last week’s beat down. Once again the banking sector continued to show cracks and worries continued to be top of mind as Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen’s ‘no guarantee’ message regarding the US banking system deposits was delivered. She stated, “This is not something we have looked at; it’s not something we’re considering. I have not considered or discussed anything having to do with blanket insurance or guarantees of more deposits.” [Barron’s]. Her statement and tone somewhat alarmed, if not down right infuriated many that had been expecting her to say just the opposite. Uncle ‘Jerry’ Powell’s 25 bps interest rate bump at the end of March’s FOMC meeting on Wednesday alongside his rather hawkish, but somewhat rational message that confirmed that he was not seeing any interest rate cuts in 2023, did investors no favors either.

Another  mixed bag of macroeconomic reports also surfaced that seemed to be pointing towards a continued fight against inflation is ahead of us and a real possibility of recession may be too. On Tuesday, the Existing home sales report confirmed a 14.5% M/M jump in February to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.58M, while total sales in February were off a whopping 22.6% Y/Y. On Wednesday, the Weekly MBA Mortgage Application Index report that showed a 3% rise as refinancing applications jumped 5%, while purchase applications moved by 2%. The Weekly EIA Crude Oil Inventories report confirmed a 1.06M barrel draw. On Thursday, the Initial jobless claims report for the week ending March 18 that confirmed a 1k drop to 191k & the continuing jobless claims for the week ending March 11 interesting rose by 14k to 1.694M. The Q4 current account balance increases to -$206.8B. The New home sales report showed a 1.1% M/M rise in February to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 640k units, while on Y/Y basis they were off a whopping 19%. The Weekly EIA Natural Gas Inventories confirmed a 72 bcf drawdown. On Friday, the durable goods orders report confirmed a drop by 1% M/M in February. The IHS Markit Services PMI report showed a move up to 53.8 in the preliminary March reading.

At the end of the week, the S&P 500 closed at 3970.99 (+1.4%) for the week and is now up 3.4% YTD. 9 0f the 11 sectors landed in the green over the course of the week as the real estate sector fell 1.4% & the utilities fell 1.2%.  The communication services sector’s 3.4% led all again this week, while the energy sector’s 2.3% (oil prices rebounded) & the information technology sector’s 2% followed closely. The 6.82% weighting of the shares of Apple (AAPL) provided relative strength again this week as it closed at $160.25, +3.39% over the last 5-days as did the influential shares of EV giant Tesla (TSLA) that closed at $190.41, moving up 5.71% over the course of the week.

Despite these efforts, mining rates have remained below this threshold and cash costs per ounce have remained higher than anticipated primarily due to ongoing challenges such as contractor inefficiencies and high costs, inflationary cost pressures, lower than expected head grades and multiple extreme weather events affecting northern Nevada, which have compounded conditions and caused material headwinds for the operation. “The decision to temporarily suspend mining activities at Jerritt Canyon, which represented approximately 21% of the Company’s 2022 revenue, was driven by our goal to produce profitable ounces across the Company,” stated Keith Neumeyer, President and CEO.

The Madison-based fertility center primarily offers conventional IVF procedures and generated approximately $5.5 million in revenue and net income of approximately $1.9 million for the trailing 12-month period ended September 30, 2022. Wisconsin Fertility Institute is one of the state’s preeminent fertility centers, having helped to welcome over 5,000 babies since opening its doors in 2007 and with approximately 550 conventional IVF procedures completed in 2022. Wisconsin Fertility Institute is led by internationally renowned and well-respected fertility expert, Dr. Elizabeth Pritts, who will continue to serve as the clinic’s lead physician for a minimum period of three years from the closing of the acquisition. Dual-certified in General Obstetrics and Gynecology, as well as Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Dr. Pritts completed a surgical fellowship in Advanced Gynecologic Laparoscopy and Hysteroscopy. She is also a national leader in the use of robotic surgery for gynecologic disorders. Dr. Pritts served as an assistant professor in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the University of Wisconsin Medical School, as a clinical fellow at the University of California at San Francisco, and as an instructor at Yale University School of Medicine. • On Jan. 5, INVO Bioscience announced it has entered an exclusive distribution agreement with Ming Mei Technology Co. Ltd (“Ming Mei”) for Taiwan. The agreement will have an initial 1-year term with renewals. Ming Mei is a leading distributor of fertility-based devices and components in Taiwan helping to bring the latest and most advanced medical equipment into the region. Ming Mei estimates it has approximately 90% coverage of reagents and consumables in the reproductive medicine market in Taiwan. With strong customer relationships in the region, and their familiarity with the field of reproductive medicine, Ming Mei is ideally suited to expand distribution of INVOcell in Taiwan. Taiwan is a destination for assisted reproductive technology (ART) throughout Asia and also has the lowest birthrate in the world. Taiwan’s birth rate has dropped as a result of similar trends elsewhere in Asia, such as later marriage and increasing cost of living. Further, the average age of patients requiring therapy is rising. Fortunately, according to the statistics published by “ICMART”, the overall implantation rate of therapy in Taiwan ranked second worldwide, almost equal to the level in the U.S., and a leading country in Asia. The stable high success rate derives from updated medical research and enriched clinical experience from the physicians, advanced laboratory facilities and technology as well as patient-centered customized treatment plans (depending on their age, ovarian functions and causes of infertility, etc.). Prior to the pandemic, in 2019 there were approximately 55,000 ART cases in Taiwan, an increase of approximately 55% compared to 2016. In July 2021, the government in Taiwan implemented a subsidy plan for ART with the goal of encouraging more local married couples to undergo ART treatments. The subsidies are also available to transnational couples in which one spouse holds a Taiwanese ID card.

Cytovia Therapeutics aims to accelerate patient access to transformational cell therapies and immunotherapies, addressing several of the most challenging unmet medical needs in cancer. Cytovia focuses on harnessing the innate immune system by developing complementary and disruptive iPSC-derived Natural Killer (iNK) cell and Flex-NK™ bispecific antibody platforms. The company is developing three types of iNK cells: unedited iNK cells, TALEN® gene-edited iNK cells with improved function and persistence, and TALEN® gene-edited iNK cells with chimeric antigen receptors (CAR-iNKs) to improve tumor-specific targeting. The second complementary cornerstone technology is a quadrivalent multifunctional antibody platform designed to engage natural killer cells by targeting NKp46 using Cytovia’s proprietary Flex-NK™ technology. These two technology platforms are being used to develop treatment for patients with solid tumors such as HCC and glioblastoma as well as hematological malignancies such as refractory multiple myeloma. Headquartered in Aventura, FL., Cytovia has research and development laboratories in Natick, MA. The company’s own R&D work is augmented through scientific partnerships with Cellectis, CytoImmune, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, INSERM, the New York Stem Cell Foundation, the National Cancer Institute, and the University of California San Francisco (UCSF). Cytovia has a partnership with CytoLynx Therapeutics focused on research and development, manufacturing, and commercialization activities in Greater China.
