U.S. equities closed sharply lower on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, as stronger-than-expected business activity data and renewed inflation concerns drove Treasury yields higher and increased expectations for further Federal Reserve tightening. The selloff was broad, with the Nasdaq Composite falling more than 1%, small caps declining the most among major equity benchmarks, and volatility rising.

The session marked a reversal from the prior day’s risk-on tone, when the Nasdaq reached a record close. Wednesday’s action instead reflected a repricing of the interest-rate outlook: higher yields pressured rate-sensitive growth stocks, consumer discretionary shares, utilities, communications names, small caps, gold, and cryptocurrencies.
Macro Commentary: Stronger Growth, Sticky Inflation
The central macro development was a notably strong September reading in S&P Global’s preliminary business surveys. The services PMI climbed to 58.7 from 56.5 in August, its strongest reading in nearly five years, while the manufacturing PMI rose to 56.7, a more than four-year high. Both readings are well above 50, the level that separates expansion from contraction. On the surface, that combination points to a resilient U.S. economy. The complication for investors is that the same data showed a renewed acceleration in input costs, with higher fuel and transportation expenses contributing to the sharpest cost increase in four years. That makes the report less of a straightforward “growth is good” signal and more of a growth-plus-inflation warning for markets. In practical terms, stronger activity can sustain corporate revenues and earnings, but it can also make it harder for the Federal Reserve to bring inflation back to its 2% target. That tension was on full display Wednesday: economic momentum supported the macro outlook, while the prospect of a more restrictive policy path reduced the value investors were willing to pay for long-duration assets such as technology stocks. Federal Reserve Governor Michael Barr said further policy adjustments were likely to be necessary, arguing that inflation remains above target and that risks to the inflation outlook have increased. Market-implied odds of another quarter-point Fed rate increase at the October meeting moved meaningfully higher after the data, according to CME FedWatch figures cited by CNBC.
Why yields matter
The bond-market move was the key transmission mechanism into equities. The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield rose to about 5.06%, while the 30-year yield reached roughly 5.35%; the 10-year level was the highest since July 2007. The 2-year yield also jumped, underscoring that investors were reassessing both the near-term Fed path and the possibility of inflation staying elevated for longer. Higher Treasury yields affect markets in several ways:
- They raise the discount rate used to value future corporate cash flows, which can put the greatest pressure on growth and technology stocks.
- They raise borrowing costs for households and businesses, with the Mortgage Bankers Association-reported average 30-year fixed mortgage rate rising to 7.12%, its highest level since 2024.
- They increase financing costs for highly leveraged companies and capital-intensive industries.
- They make risk-free government securities relatively more attractive compared with equities and other risk assets.
The market’s negative breadth was therefore significant. The Russell 2000’s 1.68% decline outpaced the losses in the S&P 500 and Dow, illustrating the sensitivity of smaller companies to higher financing costs and tighter credit conditions.
Commodities, Currency and Policy Watch
Crude oil climbed despite reports earlier in the day that U.S.-Iran diplomatic discussions had raised hopes for an easing in Middle East tensions. By the close, WTI crude settled at $92.56 per barrel, up 2.25%, while the supplied market data showed gold falling 1.29% to $4,319.90 per ounce. Oil remains central to the inflation narrative. The September PMI report specifically highlighted fuel and transport costs as contributors to the higher input-cost reading, making energy prices an increasingly important variable for the Fed, consumers, and corporate profit margins. Many are also monitoring reports that President Donald Trump discussed a possible restriction on U.S. diesel exports. Such a policy could potentially affect domestic refined-product availability and pricing, but it also introduces uncertainty for refiners, energy-export infrastructure, global diesel markets, and U.S. trading partners. With oil and transport costs already influencing business input prices, energy policy headlines may continue to move both commodity and inflation expectations. On the geopolitical front, the approaching Trump-Xi meeting remains an important market catalyst. Trade, rare-earth supply chains, advanced semiconductors, artificial intelligence, Taiwan, and Iran are all expected to be part of the broader strategic discussion. China’s role in critical minerals remains a particular pressure point: CNBC reported that China controls roughly 70% of global rare-earth mining and more than 87% of refining and production, while U.S. restrictions on advanced-chip access remain a major negotiating lever. For markets, a constructive dialogue could ease some supply-chain and trade-risk concerns. Conversely, no progress, or new restrictions involving technology, rare earths, or tariffs, could heighten volatility across semiconductors, industrials, defense, electric vehicles, and multinational companies with China exposure.
Corporate and Sector Movers
Several company-specific developments stood out against the broader risk-off backdrop:
- IonQ, Inc. (NYSE: IONQ) gained attention after reporting a real-time quantum-error-decoding achievement and announcing a collaboration with NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA). IonQ plans to place its Superion 256 quantum computer at NVIDIA’s Accelerated Quantum Research Center in Boston, where the companies expect to pursue hybrid quantum-classical research, including financial modeling, portfolio optimization, and drug-discovery applications. CNBC reported that IonQ shares rose by more than 13% earlier in the session following its quantum-computing update.
- NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA) remains at the center of investor interest not only through quantum-computing partnerships but also because its advanced AI chips are a strategic factor in U.S.-China policy discussions. CNBC reported that limited sales of NVIDIA H200 AI chips to China have been allowed while broader technology restrictions continue.
- Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) remains in focus ahead of a planned October 1 Roadster reveal and after a September 24 Semi-related event. A CNBC options-market commentary noted that Tesla’s one-month implied volatility remained toward the low end of its recent range despite multiple potential catalysts, including the Roadster event, delivery data, and earnings. Investors will be watching for tangible details on Roadster specifications, pricing, production timing, autonomous-driving execution, and vehicle-demand trends.
- The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS) is reportedly preparing another round of streaming price increases. Bloomberg, via Yahoo Finance, reported that ad-free Disney+ could rise 13%, or $2.50, to $21.49 per month, while several Hulu and bundle plans would also become more expensive. The development reinforces a sector-wide focus on direct-to-consumer profitability, pricing power, subscriber retention, advertising, and churn.
- McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE: MCD) fell sharply intraday after unveiling a multiyear growth plan while warning that inflation and flat restaurant traffic could persist. CNBC reported that shares were down more than 5% during Wednesday’s trading, extending a stretch of investor concern over consumer spending and restaurant-industry cost pressures.
- Worthington Enterprises, Inc. (NYSE: WOR) moved higher after reporting results and citing expanding demand for engineered tanks used in liquid-cooling systems for data centers. The company’s commentary offers another example of AI infrastructure spending filtering into adjacent industrial supply chains.
- KB Home (NYSE: KBH) traded lower after its fourth-quarter delivery outlook came in below expectations and its projected housing gross-margin range trailed the consensus estimate cited by CNBC. Higher mortgage rates are a direct headwind for the housing industry, and Wednesday’s increase in Treasury yields reinforces that concern.
- Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOGL, GOOG), Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN), Meta Platforms, Inc. (NASDAQ: META), and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT) remain central to the AI capital-expenditure narrative. Yahoo Finance cited Goldman Sachs estimates that the four hyperscalers could spend roughly $800 billion on capital expenditures in 2026, much of it associated with the AI buildout. That spending supports demand across chips, networking, cloud infrastructure, power, cooling, data-center construction, and enterprise software—but also raises investor scrutiny around monetization, free cash flow, and debt financing.
Market Outlook
Wednesday’s close shifts the immediate focus from record equity levels to three linked questions:
- Will inflation pressures broaden beyond energy? The PMI data suggest that cost pressures are becoming more visible in the services and manufacturing economy, not just at the gas pump.
- How much more Fed tightening will markets price in? Strong activity data and hawkish commentary have pushed rate-hike expectations higher. The direction of the 2-year and 10-year Treasury yields will remain a real-time signal of whether that repricing continues.
- Can corporate earnings offset valuation pressure? Strong economic activity can support revenues, but elevated yields make premium valuations harder to defend—particularly in growth, AI, consumer discretionary, real estate, homebuilding, and smaller-cap equities.
The broader message from Wednesday’s session is that the market is navigating a difficult mix: the U.S. economy appears stronger than many expected, but that strength is now reviving fears that interest rates may remain higher for longer. Until investors see clearer evidence that inflation is moderating, Treasury yields, and not just earnings headlines, are likely to remain a dominant force in daily equity-market direction.

Similarweb Ltd. (NYSE: SMWB)
Similarweb explores the many ways AI, apps, and other transformational forces are changing online shopping in its State of Ecommerce 2026 report, published on Sept 10. They reported that despite increasing more than 200% over the past year, direct referrals from dedicated AI platforms don’t produce a large volume of traffic to ecommerce marketplaces and online stores. In other words, compared with search, AI conversations don’t result in as much immediate click-through traffic. However, AI buying recommendations exert an outsize influence on purchases – in some cases, giving the recommended brand a 2-to-1 advantage over its competitors. Consumers are also making ChatGPT, Gemini, and other conversational AI tools a routine part of the buying process. However, that doesn’t mean they are abandoning search, 89% of the time, consumers who use AI in their shopping research also use search. “Consumers are not switching tools, they are stacking them,” said Daniel Reid, Principal Insight Analyst, Consumer Goods & Retail at Similarweb and the lead author of the report. “People are using AI to explore and narrow options while still turning to Search to move toward a decision. The most complex journeys, the ones that use both, convert the best. Retailers and brands who figure out how to master these new paths to product discovery stand to benefit.”
Similarweb Ltd. (NYSE: SMWB) and NIQ (NYSE: NIQ) have recently announced their planned Agentic Commerce Measurement solution aims to connect AI-based product discovery with consumer intent, traffic, conversion and verified sales outcomes. The first version is expected in the fourth quarter of 2026, initially across selected categories and markets. For many, the strategic appeal is simple: as AI becomes an increasingly consequential front door to commerce, the value may accrue not only to the companies building AI assistants, but also to the data-and-measurement providers that tell enterprises whether all that artificial intelligence is generating actual revenue, or merely very articulate window-shopping.
SMWB also recently delivered the sort of second-quarter report investors tend to enjoy: revenue and profitability exceeded guidance, full-year expectations moved higher, and AI demand translated into contracts rather than merely conference-call poetry. SMWB closed at $8.58, +.94%. Learn More.
LG Display Co., Ltd. (LPL)
LG Display Co., Ltd. (NYSE: LPL, $2.94) has spent the last few years doing something many hardware companies talk about but few execute well: turning a technology pivot into a full‑blown business transformation that everyday investors can actually follow. Instead of chasing commoditized LCD TV panels in a race to the bottom, LPL is leaning into Gaming OLED, CES‑worthy innovation, and premium automotive displays – and the press trail tells a surprisingly investor‑friendly story.
Yatsen Group (NYSE: YSG)
Yatsen Group (NYSE: YSG, $2.76, +1.10%), a leading China-based beauty group, delivered the sort of quarter that can make a turnaround investor sit up straighter: reported revenue grew, its strategically important skincare operation accelerated sharply, and the company is increasingly built around clinical and premium brands rather than a pure color-cosmetics play. The results are not yet a victory lap, losses widened and third-quarter guidance is cautious, but YSG’s transformation is beginning to look less like a cosmetic touch-up and more like a genuine renovation.
YSG announced (July 8) a landmark collaboration to bring its flagship brand, Perfect Diary, to Sephora in China. This partnership integrates Yatsen’s rigorous scientific infrastructure with the world’s leading prestige beauty retailer, marking a significant milestone in Yatsen’s continuing evolution into a global beauty technology powerhouse.

Doximity, Inc. (NYSE: DOCS) announced (Aug. 6) results of its fiscal 2027 first quarter ended June 30, 2026. Jeff Tangney, co-founder and CEO of Doximity, “We’re proud that our clinical AI assistant, Doximity Ask, was the top-performing U.S.-based model in the NOHARM benchmark while we delivered another quarter of record engagement. In Q1 we had accelerated revenue growth along with workflow active prescriber growth of more than 30% year-over-year and AI Search query growth of over 25% quarter-over-quarter.”

Doximity is updating guidance for its fiscal year ending March 31, 2027 as follows:
- Revenue between $671 million and $681 million.
- Adjusted EBITDA between $309 million and $329 million.
Sable Offshore Corp. (SOC)
Sable Offshore Corp. (NYSE: SOC, $4.15) has moved from the awkward “pre-revenue restoration project” phase into something much more recognizable to Wall Street: a company selling meaningful volumes of oil, generating operating cash flow, and building momentum into a potentially larger 2027 earnings base. The second-quarter report on Monday was not a polished victory lap—midstream bottlenecks and one-time costs made sure of that—but it offered something potentially more valuable: proof that the Santa Ynez Unit restart is translating into barrels, revenue, and operational traction. Learn more.
T1 Energy Inc. (NYSE: TE)
T1 Energy Inc. (NYSE: TE, $4.04) offers a different type of growth story: one rooted in domestic production, trade-policy tailwinds and execution on solar manufacturing capacity. T1 announced (Aug. 27) that local officials in Mo i Rana, Norway, have rezoned a portion of the company’s Giga Arctic campus, allowing for the development of a data center. T1 is pursuing multiple pathways to monetize this brownfield facility as part of a value optimization initiative.
T1 recently reported second-quarter net sales of $250.1 million, produced 935 megawatts of solar modules at its G1_Dallas facility and generated adjusted EBITDA of $10.7 million. The company also monetized $39.1 million of 2025 Section 45X tax credits and ended the quarter with $156.4 million in cash, cash equivalents and restricted cash, including $79.1 million unrestricted. The headline loss should not be ignored: T1 reported a $36.9 million net loss from continuing operations, while its adjusted EBITDA benefited from $24.4 million in tariff refunds recognized in cost of sales. Yet the more interesting investor question is whether the company is creating a viable U.S. solar-manufacturing platform at a time when supply-chain security and domestic energy capacity carry unusually high strategic value. The company expects its first solar cells from a planned 2.1-gigawatt manufacturing facility in the first quarter of 2027. With 3 gigawatts of firm contracts, a 641-megawatt offtake agreement with Clearway and 2026 output expected toward the upper end of its 3.1-to-4.2-gigawatt range, T1’s story is increasingly about turning production capacity into contracted revenue. For investors, TE is less a conventional earnings multiple story than an execution-and-optionality story. If domestic solar demand remains durable and manufacturing milestones stay on schedule, the market may ultimately value the company less like a troubled commodity producer and more like a strategically positioned industrial platform.
Nvidia (NVDA, $225.51)
NVDA announced plans (Sept. 3) to acquire open-AI platform Hugging Face for approximately $13 billion, with closing expected in 2027. The move reinforces NVIDIA’s effort to deepen its position across AI infrastructure, development tools, and the open-source AI ecosystem. Learn More.
Nvidia once again delivered (Wed., August 26) results that made Wall Street’s estimates look rather conservative. After the bell on Wednesday, NVIDIA, for its fiscal second quarter, the AI-chip leader reported adjusted earnings of $2.22 per share, ahead of the $2.10 consensus forecast, while revenue reached $96.22 billion, comfortably above expectations of $92.17 billion. The performance underscores Nvidia’s central role in the global AI buildout, where demand for its computing hardware continues to turn ambitious data-center plans into exceptionally large purchase orders. In short: the company remains one of the market’s preferred ways to bet on artificial intelligence, and, judging by the numbers, the machines are still very much hungry.
