Large Caps Fall Short of Positive But Russell, WBA & NIO Drive Higher

The large cap indices started out decidedly lower out of the gates this morning, but fought their way back ending just shy of positive. The S&P 500 closed at 3,483.23 (-down .15%, the Dow 30 closed at 28,494.20 down .07% & the tech heavy Nasdaq closed off .47% ending at 11,713.87. However the little guys on Russell 2000 provided a bright light among the the redwoods ending up 1.06% closing at 1,638.88 today.  Dow 30 component Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA) also closed at $37.64/share up 4.8% after beating Wall Street’s quarterly earnings expectations.

The macroeconomic schedule delivered several points of interest that were mixed. The Initial claims report for the week ending October 10 rose by 53k to 898k while Continuing claims for the week ending October 3 dropped by 1.165M to 10.018M. The Philadelphia Fed Index jumped to 32.3 in October more than doubling the results in September. The Empire State Manufacturing Survey for October dropped to 10.5. Import prices rose .3% in September & export prices also rose .6% in September.

The highly weighted FAANG closed mostly down as follows: Apple (AAPL) closed at $120.71/share down by .4%, Amazon (AMZN) closed at $3,338.65/share down .75% & Facebook (FB) closed at $266.72/share down 1.88%. Netflix (NFLX) closed at $541.94/share up .09% & Alphabet (GOOG) closed at $1,559.13/share down .57%. 

Also from the tech sector, Elon Musk’s Tesla (TSLA) closed higher at $448.88/share down 2.69%. Tesla’s 52-week post forward split low is $43.67/share and its recent all-time new high is $502.49/share. Chinese electric car manufacturer NIO Limited (NIO) notched another win as it closed at $28.07/share up 5.92% now up rose +28% the last 2 days after reaching a new 52-week high of $29.23 today. JPMorgan  recently selected them as a”long term winner” in the Chinese EV market. We also continue to like clean hydrogen solution provider Plug Power (PLUG) dropped 1.56% closing at $17.03.

Precious metals moved up again today as gold closed at $1,908(+79) while silver closed at $24.35/oz (+.05). North American silver and gold producer Hecla Mining Company (HL) closed at $5.44/share down .37% after recently establishing another new 52-week high of $6.79/share during intraday trading. HL’s 52-week low is $1.40. Barrick Gold Corporation (GOLD) closed at $27.75/share down 1.98%. 

Oil prices moved lower closing at $40.96/bbl down .2%. Chevron (CVX) closed at $73.51/share up .77%. 

The 2-yr US treasury yield closed even at .13% while the 10-yr yield closed rose 2 basis points at .73%. The U.S. Dollar Index strengthened closing at 93.83. 

Q3 2020 has produced 34 IPO raises in the healthcare sector raising over $6.2B in proceeds  which brings the YTD number to 69 IPO’s raising approximately $16.5B in proceeds. We have also seen 81 follow-on raises securing $12.4B in proceeds in Q3 bringing the YTD number 270 FO deals raising $51.5B in proceed. 

Also, in healthcare sector and of note, Northwest Biotherapeutics (NWBO), a biotechnology company developing DCVax® personalized immune therapies for solid tumor cancers, which recently announced that the database for their Phase III trial of DCVax®-L for Gliobastoma has been locked. Shares of Northwest closed at $1.44/share up 35.85% today on 20.29M shares of trading and now enjoys a market cap is $1.05B.

The macroeconomic calendar on Thursday will deliver the weekly Initial and Continuing Claims report, the Philadelphia Fed Index for October, the Empire State Manufacturing Index for October, Import and Export Prices for September, and the Treasury Budget for September.

Atossa Therapeutics (NASDAQ: ATOS) closed at $2.18/share even on the day.

The ongoing Phase 1 study is a double-blinded, randomized, and placebo-controlled safety study of AT-301 nasal spray in 32 healthy adult subjects divided into two study groups. Part A consists of two single-dose cohorts receiving either active therapy, AT-301B, or the placebo comparator AT-301A at two different doses. Part B is a multiple-dose arm with cohorts receiving either AT-301A or AT-301B for 14 days at two different doses. The primary objective of the study is to evaluate the safety and tolerability of single and multiple doses of AT-301 administered via nasal instillation to healthy volunteers. Secondary objectives are to assess the incidence and severity of local irritation and bronchospasm following administration of AT-301 via nasal instillation.   • Shares of Fate Therapeutics (FATE) closed at $48.10/share up 2.43% after recently establishing a new all-time high of $49.68.
    • Fate is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company dedicated to the development of programmed cellular immunotherapies for cancer and immune disorders. 

    • On Aug. 19, Fate announced that Edward Dulac has been appointed Chief Financial Officer. Mr. Dulac comes to the Company from Celgene Corporation, where he most recently served as Vice President, Business Development & Strategy, and brings an extensive array of biopharmaceutical experience having served for over 20 years in positions in finance, business development, and product portfolio strategy.
    • On Aug. 5, Fate Reported Second Quarter 2020 Financial Results and Highlights Operational Progress ending the quarter with $533 Million in Cash & Short-term Investments.     • July 14th, FATE announced that the Company entered into an exclusive license agreement with Baylor College of Medicine covering alloimmune defense receptors, a first-in-class approach that renders off-the-shelf allogeneic cell products resistant to host immune rejection. Preclinical studies published in the journal Nature Biotechnology (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41587-020-0601-5) demonstrate that allogeneic cells engineered with a novel alloimmune defense receptor (ADR) are protected from both T- and NK-cell mediated rejection, and provide proof-of-concept that ADR-expressing allogeneic cell therapies can durably persist in immunocompetent recipients.

    • On June 11th, FATE announced that it had closed an underwritten public offering of 7,108,796 shares of its common stock, which included 927,324 shares that were issued pursuant to the full exercise of the underwriters’ option to purchase additional shares, at a public offering price of $28.31 per share. Aggregate gross proceeds from this offering, including the exercise of the option, were approximately $201.3 million, prior to deducting underwriting discounts and commissions and estimated offering expenses. 
  • Shares of NeuBase Therapeutics (NBSE) closed at $9.06/share up .33% after recently reaching a new 52-week high recently of $11.78/share.

    • This week, NeuBase announced the addition of Peter Nielsen, Ph.D. to its scientific advisory board. Dr. Nielsen, the primary inventor of peptide nucleic acid (PNA) technology, brings extensive experience in genetic medicine to NeuBase as the Company optimizes its PATrOL™ therapies and moves them towards the clinic.     • Recently, Chinook Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ: KDNY), a clinical-stage biotechnology company focused on the discovery, development and commercialization of precision medicines for kidney diseases, announced the closing of its merger with Aduro Biotech, Inc. and $115 million private placement financing. The combined company, now known as Chinook Therapeutics, commenced trading October 6, 2020 on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the trading symbol “KDNY.” As previously announced, the $115 million private placement financing includes participation from new investors EcoR1 Capital, OrbiMed Advisors, funds managed by Rock Springs Capital, Fidelity Management and Research Company LLC, Avidity Partners, Surveyor Capital (a Citadel company), Ally Bridge Group, Monashee Investment Management LLC, Northleaf Capital Partners, Janus Henderson Investors, Sphera Biotech and other top-tier healthcare investors. As part of the financing, Chinook’s existing investors, Versant Ventures, Apple Tree Partners and Samsara BioCapital, purchased $25 million in Chinook common stock on the same terms as the new investors. Effective as of the closing of the merger, Chinook has over $275 million in operating capital to advance its kidney disease programs.

  • On Tuesday, we received the Total CPI & the core CPI which were both up by .2% month/month in September. The NFIB Small Business Optimism Index report confirmed a rise to 104 in September.
  • On Wednesday, the Producer Price Index report for final demand confirmed a rise by .4% month/month. The index for final demand also rose .4%. The weekly MBA Mortgage Applications Index report dropped .7%.
