Wall Street’s Wild Ride: From Tech & Political Turmoil To Dow Delight This Week – $MMM $EPRX $MODD $LTRN $VIX $VKTX Rise!
Happy Saturday!
I hope has proceeded as planned or better than you could have expected. I pent the week in San Franciscos Overall, the week was characterized by a rotation out of large-cap tech stocks and into smaller companies, reflecting shifting investor sentiment and concerns about economic conditions and a broadening of investments overall across a number of sectors and sizes off companies. The markets saw mixed results, which seemed to highlight the current uncertainty in the market as investors navigate conflicting signals about economic health and monetary policy and political control i.e the U.S. Presidential candidate situation to say the least.
Wall Street’s Wild Ride
The stock market took investors on a financial thrill ride, rivaling the excitement of a caffeine-fueled economist’s rollercoaster design. From Monday to Thursday, Big Tech stocks did their best Titanic impression, with the Nasdaq shedding 2% and the S&P 500 losing about 1% for the week. However, Friday brought a plot twist worthy of a Hollywood blockbuster, as the Dow Jones Industrial Average surged over 650 points, playing the hero in this market drama. This whiplash-inducing turnaround left Wall Street questioning whether the sell-off was a turning point or just a typical bull-market pullback, setting the stage for an earnings extravaganza featuring the remaining “Magnificent Seven” tech giants in the coming week. The market volatility gauge, the “VIX” rose another 9.93% this week also offering a wild ride on Thursday popping +22.5% closing at $16.29 on Friday.
Tech Stocks’ Plunge
The tech sector took a bruising this week, with the “Magnificent Seven” giants leading the market downturn. Tesla’s shares plummeted by over 12% after reporting a profit drop exceeding 40%, while Alphabet’s stock fell 5% despite surpassing earnings expectations due to disappointing YouTube advertising revenue. This selloff in Big Tech dragged major indexes into the red, with the Nasdaq experiencing its worst daily decline since 2022 on Wednesday. The exodus from megacaps into small cap stocks highlighted a shift in investor sentiment, as concerns about softness in the US economy and the sustainability of the AI-driven rally came to the forefront.
Dow’s Dazzling Comeback
Friday brought a stunning reversal to the week’s downward trend, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average soaring over 650 points, or 1.6%. This remarkable comeback was fueled by encouraging inflation data and renewed optimism about potential interest rate cuts. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite also joined the rally, gaining 1.1% and 1% respectively. Leading the charge was manufacturer 3M (MMM), whose stock skyrocketed 21% after shattering analysts’ estimates. The day’s surge allowed the Dow to emerge as the only major index with a weekly gain, up roughly 1%.
Inflation, Small-Caps & Do Not Forget the Micros…
The Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) index, the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge, decelerated to 2.5% for the year ending in June, offering a glimmer of hope for investors. This cooling inflation data, coupled with Thursday’s surprisingly hot GDP print, set the stage for next week’s Federal Reserve policy meeting, where officials are widely expected to keep interest rates unchanged. Meanwhile, small-cap stocks thrived amid expectations of lower interest rates, with the Russell 2000 index climbing 1.4% as investors bet on a more stable economy. This shift towards smaller firms highlighted a broadening of the market’s 2024 rally beyond the dominant tech sector. Also interesting is to note that The iShares Micro-Cap ETF (IWC) closed at $129.25, +4.58% over last 5-days and now +11.38% YTD.
Rise of Value Stocks
While the tech titans were busy updating their status to “It’s complicated,” the value and cyclical stocks were sliding into the DMs of investors everywhere. These plucky underdogs, including the small- and mid-cap stocks, have been flexing their financial muscles and outperforming their flashier counterparts in recent weeks. It’s like watching the revenge of the nerds, Wall Street edition! This market plot twist isn’t just a fleeting TikTok trend either – It would seem this rotation may some serious staying power, though it might hit a few potholes on its road to stardom. As we cruise into the back half of the year, expect to see the market leadership baton being passed around like a hot potato at a juggling convention, with both tech and non-tech sectors getting their 15 minutes of fame.
Biden’s Exit Impact
President Biden’s historic decision to bow out of the presidential race has sent shockwaves through the political landscape, turning election dynamics on their head. Like a plot twist in a political thriller, this move has propelled Vice President Kamala Harris into the spotlight as the likely Democratic nominee. Harris has been steadily closing the gap with frontrunner former President Donald Trump, adding a dash of uncertainty to the election outcome. This political musical chairs has investors doing the election jitters dance, with market volatility expected to increase in the weeks leading up to November. However, seasoned market-watchers remind us that pre-election jitters are as common as campaign promises, typically subsiding once the ballots are counted and the confetti settles.
Crude Comedy
Hold onto your barrels, folks! The oil market’s been on a rollercoaster ride that would make even the most seasoned theme park enthusiast queasy. Brent crude decided to take a little siesta, lounging around $82 per barrel, down from its recent high-flying adventures. It’s as if the oil barrels collectively sighed and said, “Let’s take a breather, shall we?” Meanwhile, China’s economy is doing its best impression of a wobbly tightrope walker, causing everyone in the energy sector to clutch their pearls and reach for the smelling salts. Who knew that black gold could be so dramatic? Stay tuned for the next episode of “As the Oil Turns” – where the drama never stops and the prices are always unpredictable!
Looking ahead, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) has adjusted its crystal ball for oil prices, forecasting an average of $89 per barrel for Brent crude in 2024, up from its previous estimate of $83 per barrel[1]. This upward revision reflects expectations of persistent global oil inventory withdrawals and ongoing geopolitical risks. For the second half of 2024, the EIA predicts Brent prices will average $89 per barrel, a slight increase from $84 per barrel in the first half[1]. It’s as if the EIA is predicting a steady diet of avocado toast for the oil market – nothing too extravagant, but just enough to keep things interesting and potentially squeeze consumers’ wallets a bit tighter.
Economic Outlook for Investors
Despite the market and political rotations, the economic landscape remains surprisingly rosy for equity investors. It’s like the economy decided to throw a party, and everyone’s invited! Economic growth is taking a leisurely stroll rather than sprinting, inflation is finally catching its breath, and the Fed seems poised to sprinkle some interest rate fairy dust in the latter half of the year. This financial cocktail creates a backdrop that’s more inviting than a poolside cabana on a hot summer day.
In this environment of change and opportunity, savvy investors can ride the waves of volatility like seasoned surfers. Whether it’s market mood swings or political plot twists causing the turbulence, these fluctuations can be seen as golden tickets to diversify portfolios or snag some bargains. So, buckle up and enjoy the financial rollercoaster – it might just lead to a treasure trove of investment opportunities!

Shares of Indaptus Therapeutics, Inc. (Nasdaq: INDP), a clinical stage biotechnology company dedicated to pioneering innovative cancer and viral infection treatments, closed at $2.05, -3.52% over the last 5-days and is up 21.02% YTD. Click to watch a brief video on Indaptus Therapeutics’ Decoy20 Cancer Treatment Approach.
On June 4, Indaptus announced that it will present a poster titled, “Preliminary results of a phase 1 study of Decoy20, an intravenous, killed, multiple immune receptor agonist bacterial product in patients with advanced solid tumors,” at the American Society of Clinical Oncology annual meeting on June 1, 2024, in Chicago.
On May 22, Indaptus announced the successful advancement of its Phase 1 trial for Decoy20, an investigational novel package of broad immune agonists for cancer immunotherapy that has first-in-class potential across a diverse range of cancers including liver, pancreatic, colorectal and non-small cell lung. Following review by a Safety Review Committee (SRC) of the company’s initial clinical data, which will be presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the Company has successfully dosed the first patient in the multi-dose portion of the trial with Decoy20. The primary goal of this stage of the trial is to determine the safety of Decoy20 when administered multiple times to the same patient, and to begin to examine efficacy across multiple types of cancer. Decoy20 is composed of attenuated and killed, intact, non-pathogenic Gram-negative bacteria which are designed to act as a “decoy,” tricking the body into activating a broad antitumor response from both its innate and adaptive immune systems. In preclinical studies, the treatment has been shown to activate specialized immune receptors called TLRs, that facilitate a potent defense against tumors, without inducing excessive toxicity. The product candidate is designed to induce a strong and broad pulse of immune activation, followed by rapid clearance from the body.“Current immunotherapies usually target a few immune system pathways and have low cure rates in advanced cancers. Indaptus is investigating an incredibly exciting and differentiated approach to fighting cancerous tumors that deviates from a focus on targeted therapies in the field. The advancement of this trial is a significant milestone that builds on strong evidence that Decoy20 successfully and broadly activates potent tumor-fighting cytokines and chemokines in both the innate and adaptive immune systems, and was administered systemically without intolerable adverse events,”stated Roger Waltzman, MD, Chief Medical Officer of Indaptus.
Jeffrey Meckler, Chief Executive Officer of Indaptus, commented, “We continue to make steady progress in our clinical development plans and are receiving regular validation for results reported to date, both through a presentation in April at the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) annual meeting, and the acceptance of further data to be presented in a poster at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) annual meeting, which is considered among the top annual oncology conferences. We are encouraged by the results we have reported, along with the early results we are seeing as we advance our trial, and believe they are indicative of the potential for Decoy20, and indeed our platform as a whole. We look forward to reporting more about our progress as it develops.”
Dr. Michael Newman, Indaptus’ Founder, Chief Scientific Officer, and lead author, commented, “The new data are consistent with our preclinical animal tumor model studies and provide evidence for our hypothesis that patented Decoy bacteria can activate a wide range of innate and adaptive human immune cells involved in fighting tumors. This aligns with what we’ve observed in our ongoing Phase 1 clinical trial of Decoy20 – broad immune activation, as evidenced by transiently increased levels of many key cytokines and chemokines following single dose administration. These findings bolster our confidence in Decoy20’s potential as a multifaceted immunotherapy.
