Halloween market stall with glowing jack-o’-lanterns and banners highlighting AI stocks, market trends and the global economy for October 30, 2026.

U.S. stocks came under heavy pressure heading into October’s final closing bell as disappointing technology earnings intensified questions about artificial intelligence spending, cash generation and valuations. Meanwhile, stronger economic growth and persistent inflation challenged expectations for easier monetary policy, while healthcare, consumer staples and energy offered pockets of resilience. For the week ending Friday, October 30, 2026, the central market theme was cash flow. Many increasingly demanded evidence that enormous AI infrastructure commitments would produce durable profits, not simply higher usage or ambitious growth projections. The resulting reassessment exposed a widening divide between companies funding the buildout and businesses delivering more immediate earnings support.

Market Performance: Technology Leads the Decline

Friday produced substantial declines across all four major U.S. equity benchmarks. The Nasdaq Composite suffered the largest percentage loss, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average held up relatively better as defensive companies attracted buying.

IndexSupplied market levelFriday point changeFriday percentage change
S&P 5007,580.07-140.32-1.82%
Dow Jones Industrial Average51,770.31-572.25-1.09%
Nasdaq Composite25,437.00-747.73-2.86%
Russell 20002,811.84-47.37-1.66%

The week’s late-session weakness followed Thursday’s technology-led retreat, with earnings disappointments broadening concern about the economics of AI. Many shifted toward businesses with more established cash generation and less dependence on aggressive infrastructure investment.

AI Spending Faces a Tougher Profitability Test

Amazon’s cash outflow raises the stakes

Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) reported third-quarter earnings of $1.89 per share on revenue of $201.94 billion, below expectations of $1.96 per share and $202.31 billion. The company maintained its full-year capital-expenditure forecast of $220 billion. The larger concern was the cash required to support that investment. Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) reported approximately $42.4 billion in negative free cash flow over the 12 months through September. That was a trailing-year figure, not a single-quarter cash outflow. During the third quarter, property and equipment spending reached approximately $77 billion, compared with roughly $42 billion of operating cash generation, according to the retrieved reporting. The imbalance sharpened questions about the timing of returns from data centers, computing capacity and other infrastructure. Heavy spending does not, by itself, establish that an investment strategy will fail. The immediate market issue is whether future growth can justify the financing requirements and the time needed to convert that spending into additional cash earnings. That distinction drove much of the week’s AI debate.

Alphabet highlights the monetization challenge

Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL, NASDAQ: GOOG) also disappointed expectations and reported negative free cash flow of $9.07 billion. Its sharp Thursday decline became a focal point for broader concerns about AI spending and advertising economics. Management acknowledged that growing use of AI-powered search was affecting monetization because those queries generated revenue at a lower rate. That creates a difficult transition: a company can successfully increase adoption of a new product while weakening the near-term economics of its established business. For many, the question is no longer simply whether AI will become widely used. It is which companies will capture the profits, how much capital they must commit first and whether the transition will strengthen or dilute existing revenue streams.

Intel adds a warning about PC demand

Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) projected fourth-quarter adjusted earnings of $0.25 per share on revenue of $15 billion to $16 billion. Those forecasts fell below expectations of $0.43 per share and $17.1 billion in revenue. The company pointed to softer PC demand, higher system prices and pressure on customer budgets. Its outlook illustrated how increased spending in one part of the computing market does not automatically translate into stronger demand across the entire semiconductor industry. Sandisk (NASDAQ: SNDK) offered a more constructive assessment of future memory demand, emphasizing rising storage content across PCs, smartphones and data centers. The contrast underscores the importance of separating individual end markets rather than treating all semiconductor companies as interchangeable AI beneficiaries.

Defensive Sectors and Energy Provide Relative Support

Consumer staples and healthcare attracted buying during Friday’s technology retreat. Walmart (NASDAQ: WMT), Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO), Procter & Gamble (NYSE: PG), Merck (NYSE: MRK) and Amgen (NASDAQ: AMGN) were among the companies showing intraday strength. The rotation suggested that many were reducing exposure to the most capital-intensive growth stories rather than abandoning equities uniformly. Businesses with established demand and current earnings support offered an alternative to companies whose valuations depend more heavily on future AI returns. Energy delivered another source of relative strength. Exxon Mobil (NYSE: XOM) and Chevron (NYSE: CVX) touched intraday records after reporting quarterly results supported by stronger refining margins. Their gains stood in contrast to the broader technology selloff. Healthcare also produced notable earnings results:

  • Regeneron Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: REGN) reported adjusted earnings of $20.07 per share and revenue of $5.12 billion, above expectations of $16.42 per share and $4.56 billion. The company also raised its full-year non-GAAP gross-margin outlook on net product sales.
  • AstraZeneca (NASDAQ: AZN) reported revenue of $16.2 billion and core earnings of $2.79 per share, exceeding expectations of $16 billion and $2.59 per share. Growth in oncology, respiratory and immunology, and rare diseases supported the quarter.

These results reinforced a meaningful distinction: weakness in highly valued technology shares does not necessarily indicate that earnings are deteriorating across every sector.

Macroeconomic Report: Strong Growth Meets Persistent Inflation

Third-quarter GDP expands at a 3.4% annualized pace

The Bureau of Economic Analysis reported that real gross domestic product increased at a 3.4% annualized rate in the third quarter, accelerating from 2.2% in the second quarter. Investment, consumer spending and government spending contributed to growth, while declining exports and rising imports weighed on the calculation. Underlying private domestic demand remained strong. Real final sales to private domestic purchasers, which combine consumer spending and private fixed investment, increased at a 4.9% annualized rate, compared with 4.6% in the previous quarter. The investment details help explain why solid economic data and weak technology stocks can coexist. Spending on computers and related equipment supports current output, but the shareholders funding that spending still need an adequate financial return. A strong contribution to GDP is not the same as strong free cash flow for the companies making the purchases. The Conference Board described third-quarter growth as broad-based, supported by consumption, AI-related investment, inventories and federal spending. It also warned that weakening inflation-adjusted income could constrain spending in the fourth quarter. Separate economic analysis highlighted the acceleration in equipment investment alongside weakness in residential investment. The economy’s strength was therefore uneven, with business equipment spending advancing much faster than housing-related activity.

September PCE inflation strengthens the case for caution

September’s personal consumption expenditures report showed that inflation remained elevated:

Economic indicatorReported result
Headline PCE inflation, monthly+0.5%
Headline PCE inflation, year over year+3.6%
Core PCE inflation, monthly+0.3%
Core PCE inflation, year over year+3.1%
Personal income, monthly+0.2%
Nominal consumer spending, monthly+0.5%
Real disposable personal income, monthly-0.3%
Personal saving rate3.8%

Source: Bureau of Economic Analysis, September 2026 personal income and outlays release.

The most important relationship is between spending, prices and income. Nominal spending rose 0.5%, but inflation-adjusted spending was essentially flat. Real disposable income declined 0.3%, showing that higher dollar spending did not translate into a comparable increase in purchasing power. The quarterly and monthly inflation figures also require different interpretations. Third-quarter PCE inflation slowed to a 2.1% annualized rate, yet September’s monthly report showed renewed pressure. The broader quarter looked better than the most recent monthly reading, complicating the policy outlook.

The Federal Reserve holds rates, with two officials favoring an increase

On October 28, the Federal Open Market Committee voted 10 to 2 to maintain the federal funds target range at 3.75% to 4.00%. The statement described economic activity as expanding at a strong pace and inflation as elevated. The dissent was significant. Lisa D. Cook and Beth M. Hammack preferred a quarter-point rate increase, demonstrating that the disagreement concerned whether additional tightening was already necessary. Subsequent comments from regional Fed officials kept that debate active. St. Louis Fed President Alberto Musalem and Richmond Fed President Tom Barkin indicated Friday that higher rates could be needed to contain inflation. Those remarks were individual policy views, not a new committee decision. For many, the resulting backdrop is difficult: strong demand supports corporate revenue, but persistent inflation reduces the likelihood of quick relief from borrowing costs. At the same time, declining real income could weaken future consumption before inflation fully returns to target.

Consumer Confidence Improves, but the Recovery Remains Uneven

The Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index increased to 91.7 in October from a revised 84.2 in September, ending three consecutive monthly declines. Bloomberg reported that the improvement reflected brighter assessments of employment and business conditions. The Present Situation Index rose to 120.4, while the Expectations Index recovered to 72.6. The rebound was encouraging, but it did not eliminate the longer-running pressure on household sentiment or purchasing power. This creates an important contrast with September’s spending data. Consumers felt better about conditions in October, but the preceding month’s real-income decline showed that confidence and financial capacity were not moving in lockstep. The Conference Board’s broader assessment similarly emphasized looking beyond headline resilience to understand underlying risks.

Oil, Gold, Treasury Yields and Bitcoin

The attached screenshots showed oil rising while gold and bitcoin declined, alongside a higher volatility reading. These figures reflect the supplied snapshots, not synchronized official settlement prices.

Asset or indicatorSupplied readingDisplayed change
10-year Treasury yield4.9290%-0.0600 percentage point
VIX19.72+14.64%
Gold$3,892.60-3.44%
Bitcoin$76,718.93-2.56%
December crude oil futures$102.93 per barrel+0.91%

Oil’s strength carried consequences beyond energy-sector profits. Bloomberg reporting linked the advance to the risk of renewed U.S. military strikes against Iran and possible disruption to regional energy flows. Higher crude prices could support producers while placing additional pressure on transportation costs, inflation and household budgets. The Conference Board warned that further Middle East hostilities could lift gasoline prices and weaken consumer affordability, adding another constraint to an already complicated growth and inflation outlook.

Binance Security Incident Adds Another Risk for Crypto

Binance said a security incident had an estimated $6.3 billion impact and that approximately $3 billion in affected assets had been frozen. The exchange pledged to cover losses through company resources and its user-protection fund. Those assurances were company statements during an ongoing investigation. The incident also generated debate over whether AI helped conceal the movement of stolen funds. Commentary in the requested video suggested that AI may have assisted the laundering process, but the accompanying reporting stated that investigators had not established an AI role. Automated transactions and unusual routing patterns do not, by themselves, prove AI involvement. For many holding digital assets, the episode added custody and operational-security concerns to an already weak trading environment. Bitcoin’s decline coincided with both the exchange incident and the broader retreat from risk-sensitive assets, so attributing the entire move to one development would overstate the available evidence.

What Matters Heading Into Next Week

Three relationships will be particularly important. First, AI spending must be evaluated alongside cash generation. Adoption can continue growing even while the companies financing the infrastructure face pressure on profitability and valuations. Second, strong GDP does not remove the risk of a consumer slowdown. September’s flat real spending and declining real disposable income suggest that household momentum deserves closer attention than headline growth alone might imply. Third, sector leadership may matter as much as overall market direction. Healthcare, staples and energy offered relative support while technology struggled, highlighting the difference between a concentrated valuation reset and a broad deterioration in corporate earnings. The week’s central tension was clear: the economy continued expanding, but many became less willing to pay today for profits that remain years away. Elevated inflation and uncertain borrowing costs made that patience harder to sustain.

Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL, GOOG)

Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL, GOOG) is confronting an expensive paradox: Artificial intelligence is bringing more activity to Google while making the economics of that activity harder to predict. Yet the latest results offer a more constructive interpretation than a simple obituary for search. Third-quarter revenue increased 25% to $127.6 billion. Operating income climbed 30% to $40.6 billion. Google Cloud revenue more than doubled. Those are unusual credentials for a company supposedly being escorted toward technological irrelevance. At the close on Thursday, Alphabet shares traded at $283.82, following a 12.64% decline, many are clearly demanding more proof and fewer architectural renderings of future data centers. That skepticism is understandable. But the opportunity lies in distinguishing a difficult transition in monetization from a collapse in demand. Google’s problem is not that people have stopped asking questions. According to management, its year-over-year search-query growth reached its highest rate in five years during the third quarter. The more consequential question is how quickly Google can turn its expanding AI audience into attractive, durable cash flow. Wall Street has little patience for a renovation when the contractor’s estimate begins with a trillion.
