Week ending Friday, August 7, 2026 — U.S. equities finished the week decisively higher, led by technology and smaller-capitalization shares. The market’s message was nuanced: economic activity indicators remained firm, but July’s unexpected payroll decline reinforced the view that the labor market is losing momentum and that the Federal Reserve’s policy path remains highly data dependent.
What Moved Markets
The rally began with a powerful early-week advance and broadened into small caps, while the Nasdaq Composite outperformed with a 5.17% gain for the week. The combination of falling oil prices, lower Treasury yields and resilient corporate and economic data created a favorable backdrop for risk assets—even as Friday’s employment report introduced a more cautious macroeconomic note. July employment data showed nonfarm payrolls declining by 23,000, versus consensus expectations for a gain, while unemployment edged down to 4.1%. Healthcare continued to add jobs, but weakness in local-government education and retail employment highlighted a more selective hiring environment. For investors, the report does not independently establish a recession narrative. It does, however, raise the stakes for upcoming inflation and consumer-demand data: a slower labor market can support easier monetary policy expectations, but only if inflation continues to moderate.
Macroeconomic Report Commentary
The economy is sending mixed, but not uniformly negative, signals. Real GDP expanded at a 1.5% annualized rate in the second quarter, down from 2.1% in the prior quarter; nonetheless, the underlying demand composition was sturdier than the headline growth rate alone suggests. Manufacturing added another constructive data point. The July ISM Manufacturing PMI rose to 55.6, its highest reading since May 2022, with the employment component returning to expansion territory at 52.8. Services activity also remained expansionary, with the July ISM Services PMI at 54.1.
The key tension is therefore clear:
- Growth: Slower headline GDP growth and a negative payroll print argue for caution.
- Activity: Manufacturing and services data still point to an expanding economy.
- Inflation/rates: The 10-year Treasury yield finished at 4.66%, lower for the week but still elevated enough to matter for valuations, housing and capital-intensive businesses.
- Commodities: The decline in oil prices ($77.06/bbl and off 4.01% over the last 5-days)may relieve some immediate inflation pressure, while the outsized move in gold suggests investors still see value in hedging macro and geopolitical risk.
Takeaway
The week favored a “soft-landing with caveats” interpretation: economic growth appears slower, but not stalled; manufacturing remains constructive; and equities responded positively to the prospect that weaker employment may temper rate pressure. The breadth of the advance—including the Russell 2000’s 3.52% weekly gain—was more encouraging than a narrowly concentrated technology rally. Still, investors should avoid treating one payroll report as a definitive turning point. The next major test is whether inflation data validate the market’s more accommodating-rate outlook. A renewed rise in inflation or Treasury yields could challenge higher-multiple growth stocks, while continued disinflation alongside stable consumer activity would support the current constructive equity backdrop.
Looking Ahead
Markets will focus on:
- July consumer-price inflation data and whether disinflation is resuming.
- Retail sales and consumer-spending trends following the softer employment report.
- Treasury-market direction, especially whether the 10-year yield can remain below the recent 4.7% area.
- Corporate earnings quality, including revenue growth, margins and forward guidance—not merely headline earnings beats.
- Market breadth, with particular attention to whether small caps and cyclicals can sustain participation.

Eupraxia Pharmaceuticals Inc. (EPRX)
Eupraxia Pharmaceuticals Inc. (EPRX, $6.77, +5.78% over the last 5-days), a clinical-stage biotechnology company leveraging its proprietary Diffusphere™ technology designed to optimize local, controlled drug delivery for applications with significant unmet need, wrapped up its KOL event today with a clear message for Wall Street and the GI community: EP‑104GI is not just another esophageal steroid, it is being architected to live comfortably inside real‑world upper endoscopy practice for eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) patients. By the end of the session, the tone had shifted from “could this work?” to “this is how we would use it on Monday,” which is exactly the inflection investors watch for
EPRX announced (July 7) the appointment of Robert Bazemore, Amy Pottand Dr Helen Thackray to the Board of Directors. “We are delighted for Robert, Amy and Helen to join our Board of Directors at a pivotal stage for the company.” said Dr. James A. Helliwell, Chief Executive Officer of Eupraxia. “Their collective expertise across late-stage drug development, commercial strategy, and global product launches will be invaluable as we execute on several key upcoming milestones for EP-104GI and continue to expand our pipeline. Eupraxia announced (May 5) the first Eosinophilic Esophagitis Endoscopic Reference Score (EREFS) data from its ongoing Phase 1b/2a part of the RESOLVE trial evaluating EP-104GI for the treatment of eosinophilic esophagitis (“EoE”). These data were also presented at the ongoing Digestive Disease Week (“DDW”) conference in Chicago. “The EREFS is an important, validated visual index of severity of EoE disease in the esophagus of patients. It measures edema, rings and strictures and other visible markers of disease often associated with symptoms. Today’s data demonstrated improvement in two key outcomes with EP-104GI in the treatment of EoE: first, that a full injection protocol of 20 injections resulted in more pronounced improvement than a protocol with fewer injections and less coverage area within the esophagus; second, with the higher number of injections, a consistent response in both the inflammatory and fibrotic sub scores of EREFS was observed,” said Dr. James A. Helliwell, Chief Executive Officer of Eupraxia. “This EREFS data being reported at DDW is consistent with the improvements we have seen in EoE symptoms and tissue health (EoEHSS) and suggests improvement in inflammation, fibrosis and the associated narrowing of the esophagus.”
