Green superhero beside a rising stock chart labeled Nasdaq, S&P 500 and Dow Jones, contrasting with housing market weakness on October 21, 2026.

U.S. stocks advanced Wednesday, October 21, with the Nasdaq Composite leading the major indexes as investors weighed strong results from SpaceX (NASDAQ: SPCX), renewed enthusiasm for artificial intelligence infrastructure and potential merger discussions involving Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA). The Nasdaq gained 1.05%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.69% and the S&P 500 added 0.58%, according to the supplied market-performance snapshot. The session highlighted a widening economic contrast: investors continued to reward the potential of AI spending, while elevated borrowing costs weighed on housing demand. Mortgage applications declined despite the first weekly drop in mortgage rates in more than two months.

Why Stocks Rose: SpaceX Results Reinforce the AI Investment Case

SpaceX (NASDAQ: SPCX) provided one of the session’s clearest catalysts. The company reported third-quarter revenue of approximately $14.6 billion, up 161% from a year earlier and above the $12.72 billion consensus estimate cited by CNBC. Operating income reached $2.8 billion, while net income totaled $4.4 billion. The composition of that growth mattered as much as the headline numbers. SpaceX’s Super Intelligence business generated $7.56 billion in quarterly revenue, compared with $813 million a year earlier, making it the company’s largest business segment. Management also cited recurring revenue from its satellite-connectivity operations. For many, those results offered evidence that AI infrastructure demand can translate into substantial revenue, not merely larger construction budgets. Nevertheless, one company’s results do not establish that every AI infrastructure provider will earn attractive returns. Merger speculation added another layer. Elon Musk said SpaceX (NASDAQ: SPCX) and Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) had established special board committees to examine a possible combination. Those discussions do not constitute an agreed transaction, and Musk acknowledged the importance of shareholder support.

Macroeconomic Report: Lower Mortgage Rates Fail to Revive Demand

Wednesday’s housing-finance report delivered a more cautious message about the broader economy. The Mortgage Bankers Association reported that total mortgage applications fell 5.3% during the week ended October 16. The average contract rate on a conforming 30-year fixed mortgage declined to 7.41% from 7.50%, its first decrease in more than two months. The lower rate did not reverse the deterioration in demand:

The central issue remains affordability. A nine-basis-point weekly decline offers limited relief when mortgage rates remain above 7% and prospective buyers face substantial monthly payments. MBA economist Joel Kan attributed the year-over-year purchase slowdown to higher rates pricing buyers out of the market. The report also helps explain why a rising stock market does not necessarily signal an equally strong household economy. AI-related earnings can support major equity indexes even as rate-sensitive activity struggles. With the 10-year Treasury yield at 5.15%, Wednesday’s market snapshot showed little evidence of a broad retreat in long-term borrowing costs.

Meta and Tesla: Earnings Expectations, Not Reported Results

Meta: Advertising Growth Versus AI Spending

Meta’s (META) third quarter earnings, as revenue reached $64.6 billion, topping Wall Street’s $63.3 billion estimate. Third-quarter earnings of $9.86 billion. The Menlo Park, California-based company said it had profit of $3.83 per share. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs, were $7.40 per share.

Tesla: Automotive Performance Meets Merger Speculation

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) reported Q3 2026 earnings with $28 billion in revenue and announced that special committees are exploring a potential merger with SpaceX. Earnings per share: 48 cents adjusted vs. 43 cents estimated & Revenue: $28.05 billion vs. $27.9 billion estimated. Meanwhile, Tesla has started production of its Optimus humanoid robot at the Fremont facility and is targeting a 2028 launch for its new SpaceX-thruster-equipped Roadster.

Nvidia’s Modular AI Infrastructure Targets Faster Deployment

Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) introduced its DSX POD reference design at its Berlin GTC event, outlining a modular approach to bringing AI computing capacity online more quickly. According to Yahoo Finance’s report, Nvidia said the Vera Rubin-powered systems could reduce deployment time from approximately six months to 14 days once the required power, cooling and networking infrastructure is available. Initial deliveries are planned for early 2027. The economic rationale is straightforward: computing equipment cannot generate service revenue while it waits to become operational. Faster deployment could shorten that delay, although modular construction does not eliminate electricity constraints or the need for supporting infrastructure.

Anthropic IPO Plans Could Test Appetite for AI Risk

Anthropic, which remains privately held, but could publicly file its IPO prospectus as early as Friday, according to Yahoo Finance, citing people familiar with its plans. A potential November listing remains dependent on market conditions and other factors. Meanwhile, JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM) analyst Doug Anmuth raised his SpaceX (NASDAQ: SPCX) price target to $500 from $240, according to Yahoo Finance. His thesis cited a combined potential addressable market exceeding $28 trillion across the company’s businesses. That figure represents an analyst’s estimate of market opportunity, not SpaceX revenue or a guaranteed outcome.

A Takeaway

Wednesday’s advance reflected confidence in AI-related growth, but the macroeconomic backdrop remained uneven. SpaceX’s results strengthened the revenue side of the AI investment argument, while declining mortgage applications showed that modest rate relief had not restored housing demand.
