U.S. stocks finished Tuesday with a split performance as the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 529.85 points, the S&P 500 advanced modestly and the Nasdaq Composite slipped just below unchanged. Small-cap stocks led the major benchmarks, with the Russell 2000 rising 1.65%, while the Cboe Volatility Index declined 5.42%. The session’s defining theme was breadth: investors found opportunities beyond the largest technology companies as corporate earnings and easing oil prices supported buying. However, a disappointing batch of housing reports underscored the economy’s sensitivity to high borrowing costs, and the Federal Reserve’s difficult balance between containing inflation and protecting growth.
Stock Market Closing Performance: October 20, 2026
| Index | Closing level | Point change | Daily change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dow Jones Industrial Average | 52,495.88 | +529.85 | +1.02% |
| S&P 500 | 7,712.57 | +21.84 | +0.28% |
| Nasdaq Composite | 26,424.82 | −6.07 | −0.02% |
| Russell 2000 | 2,773.41 | +45.12 | +1.65% |
The Russell 2000 outperformed the S&P 500 by 1.37 percentage points, illustrating the day’s stronger appetite for smaller companies. The contrast between the Dow’s advance and the Nasdaq’s slight decline also showed that Tuesday’s gains did not depend on a broad surge in technology shares.
Why Stocks Rose: Earnings Support and Lower Oil Prices
Corporate results helped investors look past renewed concerns about artificial intelligence spending. During the session, approximately three-quarters of S&P 500 constituents were trading higher, according to Yahoo Finance’s market coverage. Healthcare, airlines and homebuilders participated as oil prices retreated from earlier levels. That was an intraday breadth reading, not a final advance-decline count. Industrial and defense earnings provided additional support. 3M (NYSE: MMM) reported adjusted earnings of $2.50 per share, exceeding the $2.38 consensus estimate cited by CNBC, and raised its full-year guidance. Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC) posted earnings of $7.89 per share against expectations of $7.18, although revenue of $11.12 billion came in slightly below forecasts. Both stocks advanced during the session. Healthcare also helped broaden participation. Eli Lilly (NYSE: LLY), UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH) and Merck (NYSE: MRK) were among the companies highlighted in the sector’s intraday advance. Meanwhile, several heavyweight technology stocks lagged, limiting the broader indexes’ progress. The distinction matters: a rising market supported by more industries has a different leadership profile from one driven primarily by a handful of megacap technology companies. Tuesday’s index results were consistent with that broader participation, even though the Nasdaq finished marginally lower.
Macroeconomic Report: Housing Weakness Complicates the Fed Outlook
Housing delivered the day’s clearest economic warning. September construction and contract-signing activity weakened as elevated mortgage rates continued to constrain affordability.
| Economic indicator | Reported result | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Housing starts | 1.22 million annualized | Down 5.2% from August; below the 1.30 million consensus cited by CNBC |
| Single-family housing starts | 859,000 annualized | Down 4.6% from August |
| Building permits | 1.40 million annualized | Down 0.2% from August |
| Single-family permits | 845,000 annualized | Down 4%; lowest level since 2023 |
| Pending home sales | Down 7.3% month over month | Down 11.3% year over year; index reached a record low in data beginning in 2001 |
Figures reported by CNBC from Commerce Department and National Association of Realtors releases. Annualized construction figures represent seasonally adjusted yearly rates, not the number of homes built during September alone.
Why weaker housing does not automatically mean lower interest rates
The central problem is that housing weakness is arriving alongside persistent inflation pressure. CNBC reported mortgage rates around 7.43%, following readings near 7.6% at the end of September. Such borrowing costs discourage purchases while making homeowners reluctant to surrender existing, lower-rate mortgages. That creates a two-sided constraint: prospective buyers struggle with affordability, while existing owners have less incentive to list their homes. Consequently, weak transaction activity can coexist with limited supply rather than quickly producing a more affordable market. Ordinarily, a weakening interest-rate-sensitive sector could strengthen the argument for easier monetary policy. But inflation complicates that response. CNBC reported that market pricing favored an unchanged Fed benchmark rate at the next meeting while assigning a strong chance of quarter-point increases in December and March 2027. Those expectations remain market estimates, not announced policy decisions. For investors, the implication is a difficult mix: softer housing points to pressure on growth, but it does not by itself establish that inflation has cooled enough for monetary relief.
Corporate News: Earnings, AI Investment and Software Consolidation
General Motors tops estimates and authorizes a $20 billion buyback
General Motors (NYSE: GM) reported third-quarter revenue of $50.0 billion, exceeding the $48.52 billion consensus cited by Yahoo Finance. Adjusted earnings reached $3.70 per share versus expectations of $3.57, while adjusted operating earnings totaled $4.1 billion. The automaker also announced a new $20 billion share-repurchase authorization and narrowed its full-year profit outlook. Nevertheless, shares were under pressure before the opening bell. The reaction highlighted how guidance and inflation exposure can outweigh a headline earnings beat; the reported premarket decline should not be confused with a verified closing return.
Salesforce agrees to acquire Braze for $5.66 billion
Salesforce (NYSE: CRM) announced an agreement to acquire customer-engagement software company Braze (NASDAQ: BRZE) for approximately $5.66 billion. Under the announced terms, Braze Class A shareholders would receive $47.50 in cash per share, with closing expected in Salesforce’s fiscal 2028. Braze shares jumped more than 50% in early trading, while Salesforce shares slipped. Strategically, the proposed transaction would add customer-data and AI-enabled marketing capabilities to Salesforce’s platform. The acquisition remains pending rather than completed.
AI infrastructure concerns remain beneath the rebound
The broader rally did not eliminate questions about financing the AI buildout. CNBC reported that credit-protection costs on CoreWeave (NASDAQ: CRWV) remained elevated, even as its shares recovered during the session. Yahoo Finance also highlighted investor concern about leverage and the durability of demand across AI infrastructure businesses. The important distinction is between demand for computing capacity and the returns earned on the capital required to supply it. A recovery in AI-related stocks does not necessarily mean debt-market concerns have disappeared.
SpaceX earnings preview puts spending and monetization in focus
Ahead of its scheduled after-the-bell report, SpaceX (NASDAQ: SPCX) faced analyst expectations of $12.72 billion in revenue and earnings of $0.13 per share, according to the consensus figures cited by CNBC. After the bell, SpaceX reported 161% revenue growth for the third quarter, beating Wall Street estimates, as the company’s artificial intelligence business grew ninefold. The stock rose about 1.5% in extended trading on Tuesday. Revenue: $14.58 billion vs. $12.72 billion expected & Earnings per share: 35 cents.
Tesla and Walmart: Long-Term Growth Expectations Meet Consumer Value
Cathie Wood’s Tesla forecast is a multiyear scenario
Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) attracted attention after ARK Invest outlined a $4,400 base-case share-price target for 2031, alongside a $5,000 bull case and a $3,300 bear case. Yahoo Finance reported that the projections reflect optimistic assumptions about robotaxis, humanoid robots and Terrafab. The time horizon is essential. These are long-term investment scenarios—not near-term price objectives, company guidance or guaranteed outcomes. Separately, investors were preparing for Tesla’s scheduled Wednesday earnings report, with profitability and cash flow among the central issues.
Walmart combines memberships for $120 annually
Walmart (NASDAQ: WMT) launched a $120 annual package combining Walmart+ with Sam’s Club Plus. The company said the bundle costs nearly $100 less than purchasing the two memberships separately. The offer connects directly to the affordability backdrop: Walmart is using convenience, delivery and membership value to compete for consumer spending. Strategically, the bundle gives the retailer another way to deepen customer relationships while households navigate elevated living costs.
Bonds, Oil, Gold, Bitcoin and Volatility
| Asset or indicator | Snapshot reading | Displayed daily move |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. 10-year Treasury yield | 5.12% | Approximately −0.02 percentage points |
| December 2026 crude oil futures | $97.99 per barrel | −$0.55; −0.56% |
| Gold | $4,141.50 per ounce | −$18.60; −0.45% |
| Bitcoin | $82,544.39 | +$633.74; +0.77% |
| Cboe Volatility Index | 17.44 | −1.00; −5.42% |
Lower oil and Treasury yields provided a more supportive backdrop during the session, while the decline in the volatility index accompanied the broader equity advance. Nevertheless, a 10-year yield above 5% remained an important part of the valuation and borrowing-cost environment.

Nvidia (NVDA, $216.47, -.29%)
NVIDIA Corp. (NASDAQ: NVDA). AM Intelligence (“AMI”), the AI infrastructure platform set up by Promoters of Greenko, announced (Oct. 5) two further firm and binding orders for 20,000 NVIDIA Rubin GPUs, to be deployed as NVIDIA Vera Rubin NVL72 rack-scale systems. Building on its first AI factory in Hyderabad, the expansion is designed to give cloud providers, enterprises and AI developers access to large-scale computing capacity closer to where they build and deploy AI.
NVDA recently has seemingly has given many a two-part bullish signal: a record-sized $150 billion increase to its share-repurchase authorization and a new AI-agent safety platform aimed at making autonomous software more secure for enterprise deployment. The combination suggests a company using extraordinary financial strength not merely to reward shareholders, but to expand its influence from AI computing into the governance, security and operating layer of the AI economy. The timing is notable. Markets are beginning the week with a cautiously constructive tone, even as investors brace for jobs, inflation and manufacturing data that could reset the outlook for interest rates. In that environment, NVIDIA is making a familiar but potent argument: its AI franchise is generating enough cash to finance innovation, deepen its ecosystem and return meaningful capital to shareholders, all at once. That is not an everyday corporate trick. It is closer to juggling bowling balls while also building the bowling alley.
