U.S. stocks finished higher Tuesday, October 27, 2026, with the Nasdaq Composite rising 1.18%, the Russell 2000 advancing 1.16%, and the S&P 500 gaining 0.60%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average edged up just 0.03%, underscoring the gap between technology-led momentum and the blue-chip benchmark. Renewed interest in artificial intelligence, an unexpectedly strong rebound in consumer confidence, and a busy corporate earnings calendar shaped the session. Many widely also prepared for Wednesday’s Federal Reserve decision and earnings reports from Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL) and Microsoft (MSFT).

The combination of stronger equities and a lower VIX was consistent with improved risk appetite. However, the Treasury reading showed that Tuesday’s stock-market advance did not depend on falling long-term yields. Small-cap participation also gave the rally a broader dimension than technology strength alone. These are interpretations of the supplied cross-market figures, rather than proof of a single market catalyst.

Why Stocks Rose: AI Enthusiasm Returns Ahead of Major Earnings

Artificial intelligence remained central to Tuesday’s trading narrative. Semiconductor strength helped lift technology shares as many reassessed both the growth opportunity and the financing demands behind the AI infrastructure expansion. Enthusiasm surrounding Anthropic’s public IPO filing provided another focal point for the sector. Nvidia (NVDA) announced plans to invest $3 billion in Meta Platforms (META), alongside expanded collaboration involving Meta Platforms’ (META) Muse AI models. The investment forms part of a much larger infrastructure-funding effort, highlighting how closely chip suppliers and their largest customers are becoming financially connected. The implications run in two directions. Supplier investment can support additional infrastructure spending, but equity financing also raises questions about shareholder dilution and the eventual returns on that investment. Tuesday’s advance reflected renewed enthusiasm for AI growth, not a resolution of those underlying concerns.

Alphabet Earnings: Cloud Growth Meets Search Competition

Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL) is scheduled to report third-quarter results after Wednesday’s closing bell. Analyst expectations cited in the earnings preview call for earnings of $3.01 per share on revenue of $127.8 billion, with cloud revenue projected at $28.9 billion. These figures are forecasts, not reported result. Many will be watching whether cloud demand and sales of custom AI processors can expand the company’s earnings opportunities while its search business faces competition from AI agents. Oracle (ORCL) announced plans to deploy Alphabet’s (GOOG, GOOGL) Tensor Processing Units in its own infrastructure, adding another commercial channel for the technology.

Microsoft Earnings: Azure Demand and Spending Discipline

Microsoft (MSFT) is also scheduled to report Wednesday after the close, with its fiscal first-quarter release expected to offer an important check on enterprise AI demand. The earnings preview cited analyst expectations of $4.27 per share in earnings and $90.6 billion in revenue. The central issue is the relationship between growth and investment. Forecast capital expenditures, including leases, of approximately $45.9 billion put Azure expansion, AI adoption and cash-generation capacity at the center of the report. Strong demand would support the investment case, but investors still need evidence that infrastructure spending can translate into durable profitability.

Macroeconomic Report: Consumer Confidence Rebounds, Housing Remains Subdued

Consumer Confidence Beats Expectations

The Conference Board’s consumer confidence index rose to 91.7 in October from an upwardly revised 84.2 in September. Economists surveyed by Reuters reported that analysts had expected a reading of 81, making the improvement substantially stronger than anticipated. Easing gasoline prices helped explain the rebound, although respondents continued to express frustration with food costs, living expenses and energy prices. The distinction matters: improving confidence suggests households feel less pessimistic, but it does not mean purchasing-power pressures have disappeared. For the market, the report offered support for the view that consumer demand can remain resilient. It also complicated any simple argument that weaker household sentiment would necessarily push the Federal Reserve toward easier policy. That is an economic interpretation of the stronger survey result, not a forecast of Wednesday’s decision.

New-Home Sales Point to a Softer Housing Backdrop

September new-home sales were reported at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 676,000, compared with a revised 680,000 in August. That represented a 0.6% monthly decline and a 5.3% decrease from a year earlier. The result illustrated the unevenness of the economic picture. Consumer confidence improved, but housing activity remained below its year-earlier pace. A modest monthly change should not be treated as evidence of a decisive housing-market turn.

Federal Reserve Decision Arrives Wednesday

The Federal Reserve’s scheduled October 27–28 policy meeting concludes Wednesday, with the decision scheduled for 2 p.m. Eastern time. Market coverage entering the meeting described expectations for unchanged rates, with attention focused on whether policymakers would maintain a restrictive message about inflation. An unchanged policy rate would therefore not necessarily amount to a more supportive stance for stocks. With the supplied 10-year Treasury yield near 5%, the policy backdrop remains an important counterweight to earnings optimism. Tuesday’s rally showed many folks’ willingness to take risk ahead of the announcement, rather than certainty about its outcome.

Corporate Earnings Show a Resilient but Uneven Consumer

Tuesday’s earnings reports offered a more nuanced picture than a uniformly strong consumer economy.

  • Coca-Cola (KO) reported adjusted earnings of $0.91 per share and revenue of $13.4 billion, exceeding the expectations cited in market coverage. Global unit case volume increased 5%, although North American volume was flat.
  • United Parcel Service (UPS) raised its full-year revenue outlook to approximately $92.6 billion from $91.2 billion, supported by management’s assessment of resilient consumers and a strong holiday-demand outlook.
  • Royal Caribbean Group (RCL) reported 9% growth in guests served, reaching 2.7 million during the quarter, while bookings for 2027 were running ahead of historical level.
  • Whirlpool (WHR) missed earnings and revenue expectations and reduced its full-year revenue forecast, with North American sales falling more than 8%.

The common thread is selectivity. Spending on travel, recognizable brands and certain services remained durable, while housing-linked purchases and other categories showed pressure. Revenue growth also needs to be separated from volume growth when price increases account for part of the improvement.

Coca-Cola’s Brand Momentum Provides a Useful Example

Coca-Cola (KO) reported double-digit North American volume growth for Diet Coke and Coca-Cola Zero, even as overall regional volume remained flat. Management’s discussion of Diet Coke’s popularity illustrated how individual products can outperform a slower broader market. For many, that distinction helps explain why strong brand execution can coexist with evidence of a financially stretched consumer

Nuclear Power Connects the AI Trade to Energy Infrastructure

Constellation Energy (CEG) emerged as another AI-related focal point after the U.S. government offered up to $5 billion in conditional financing to modernize and upgrade nuclear facilities. The projects are expected to add nearly 1.1 gigawatts of electricity capacity. The conditional nature of the commitment matters. It is not equivalent to an unconditional cash payment or completed construction. The broader investment significance lies in expanding output from existing reactors as electricity demand grows, including demand associated with data centers. The announcement reinforced the connection between AI infrastructure and power generation. The investment story extends beyond processors and software to the electricity supply needed to operate the systems.

Robinhood Earnings: Options and Event Contracts Offset Crypto Weakness

Robinhood Markets (HOOD) reported a 12% increase in third-quarter revenue. Transaction-based revenue rose 19% to $867 million, supported by options and event contracts, while cryptocurrency revenue declined sharply. Options revenue increased 31% to $399 million, equities revenue rose 41% to $121 million, and cryptocurrency revenue fell 55% to $120 million. Quarterly net deposits totaled $15.7 billion. The results highlighted a shifting business mix. Robinhood Markets (HOOD) is developing additional revenue streams, but the durability of transaction growth remains an important question when activity varies substantially across products.

What Many Will Watch Next

Wednesday brings two closely connected tests for the market:

  1. Federal Reserve policy and communication, including how policymakers balance inflation concerns against signs of economic resilience.
  2. Results from Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL) and Microsoft (MSFT), particularly cloud growth, AI monetization, infrastructure spending and the relationship between investment and future cash generation.
