Why is Walmart Shuttering E-commerce Operations In Brasil?

By John Heerdink LinkedIn

It was reported recently that Walmart Brasil will close down its e-commerce operations in Brazil and concentrate more on its wholesale business as the country is slowly moving out from a severe recession.

Walmart launched its e-commerce business in Brazil in 2011 and by 2017 direct sales were discontinued. Walmart has struggled for a long time to set-up its online presence in Brasil and has been facing competition from local players. Walmart’s e-commerce division was already in decline by mid-2018, when Advent International acquired an 80% stake in its Brazilian operations.

By 2020, Walmart Brasil plans to convert its 10 low performing hypermarkets into wholesale stores Maxxi Atacado and another 10 hypermarkets to be converted to Sam’s club stores, as reported.
