Walmart Introduces Debt-Free Education To Increase Skilled Trade Workers

By John F. Heerdink, Jr.

Reportedly, The Walmart Stores, Inc. (WMT) is looking to grow its educational offerings and programs in line with its vision of focussed and future-oriented training for its workforce with skilled training.

“While the economy and our company will continue to be technology-driven, we also recognized that the U.S. suffers from a skilled trades talent gap,” stated Drew Holler, SVP of People at Walmart.

The company has teamed up with Penn Foster offering candidates to earn certificates across trades like electrical, construction, and plumbing among others. The retailer has also committed to place associates who complete their certification in entry-level job roles at the company “to gain hands-on experience.”

Walmart is also working to expand digital skills expertise by adding 19 certificates for both undergraduate and post-graduate students that include data fluency and decision making, design, and UX/UI technology from eCornell and Southern New Hampshire University.

Walmart’s 2018 “Live Better U.” program earlier offered degrees in business, leadership, and management, however, a year later, the company expanded its offerings to technology-focused and health-related degrees, based on the new areas the company is planning to indulge in. The students can earn degrees from Purdue University Global, Wilmington University, the University of Florida among others through the “Live Better U” program.

“As our economy and consumer habits continue to change and go through transformation, which is fueled by technology and also the coronavirus pandemic, investing in our associates and their future is as important as it’s ever been,” Holler added.

Reportedly, more than 25,000 full-time and part-time associates are a part of the “Live Better U Program” and more than 3,000 have completed one of the debt-free degrees.
