Walgreens Restarts Immunization Services

By John F. Heerdink, Jr.

As per reports,  Walgreens (WBA) has restarted immunization services, taking care of all safety measures for pharmacy team members and patients.  The changes comply with the updated U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines keeping in mind the flu season ahead, which may coincide with the second wave of COVID-19, as per health officials.

“Immunizations are critical to ensuring the health of our communities from vaccine-preventable illness and reducing the strain on our healthcare system, which is even more important during the pandemic,” , “As highly accessible providers of care in communities across the country, Walgreens pharmacists are available to safely administer immunizations to help patients protect themselves, their loved ones, and their communities from vaccine-preventable diseases.” stated Dr. Kevin Ban, M.D., Chief Medical Officer, Walgreens.

Walgreens continues to provide only essential immunizations followed strictly by CDC guidelines and to delay all non-urgent immunizations.

Some safety measures incorporated by Walgreens amid the Pandemic to ensure safety:

  • Pharmacy areas to maintain enhanced cleaning regimens, social distancing protocols, and plexiglass shields at registers.
  • All pharmacy team members are required to wear disposable facemasks and gloves and follow proper handwashing procedures.
  • All pharmacy team members part of the immunizations to wear plastic face shields to be used during immunizations for eye protection.
  • Patients to be encouraged to wear a face mask to protect others, and themselves. Masks to be provided in case a patient is not wearing a mask.
  • At least six feet of distance is to be maintained between pharmacy waiting area chairs.

Walgreens pharmacists have a long history of providing immunizations to patients in communities across the country, serving more than 60 million vaccines in the U.S. since 2010. Walgreens is accepting walk-ins, or patients may book an appointment in advance online.
