United Health Foundation & The Colorado Center For Nursing Excellence Seeking To Produce Better Behavioral Health Clinical Practice

By John F. Heerdink, Jr.

Reportedly, The United Health Foundation is initiating a $1.5 million grant to the Colorado Center for the next three-years. This will go to support and recruit 39 currently-employed rural Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Behavioral Health Fellows. The move will further go to help the fellows to return to graduate school and earn a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) certificate, assisting them with the application and a financial stipend. The support will ensure that the fellows attain 600 hours of behavioral health clinical practice and complete the certificate program and receive a psychiatric-mental health credential from a national nursing board. The 39 PMHNPs will be then equipped to provide behavioral health care services for a minimum of two years in rural areas supporting 3,000 to 12,000 rural Colorado patients annually.

“The Center’s vision is to transform health care through workforce innovation and this generous grant from the United Health Foundation will help us do that. Colorado’s population is growing and changing rapidly so we need new approaches like this behavioral health fellowship program to meet residents’ health needs, especially in rural communities.” stated Ingrid Johnson, DNP, MPP, RN, chief executive officer and president of the Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence.

“Advanced Practice Registered Nurses are essential for providing primary care and behavioral health care in rural and underserved communities, and there is a pressing need for expanded behavioral health care services in rural Colorado,” , “This partnership with the Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence will help rural Colorado residents lead healthier lives by training APRNs to provide the right care in the right place at the right time,” stated Brian Thompson, chief executive officer, UnitedHealthcare Government Programs.
