This week, Samsung Electronics presented its foldable smartphone shaped like a large makeup compact with 5G network capabilities. The Galaxy Z Flip with folding glass starts as a large square when closed and expands like most smartphones. The smartphone priced at $1380 will be available in purple, gold, and black. The launch marks the second attempt of Samsung in the foldable smartphone league, after a delayed roll-out last year.
“Everybody wants it to have 5G, but with the segment, they’re targeting of style-conscious younger folks, right now I think they are going to be OK,” without 5G in the Z Flip,” stated Patrick Moorhead of Moor Insights & Strategy.
As per IDC, Samsung dominated 21.6% of the global smartphone market but lost the battle to Apple Inc for December quarter after its much cheaper iPhone 11 launch. Its competitors Huawei has released folding phones in China, but Apple is yet to release any version of a 5G iPhone.
Foldables are expensive and very hard to manufacture. It will take time for foldables to become mass-market products,” stated Neil Mawston, an analyst at Strategy Analytics, expecting a mass-market takeoff by 2022 or 2023.
