Last week, Michael Jordan, a six-time NBA champion and owner of Charlotte Hornets unveiled its first out of two medical clinics in the North Carolina city. The clinics which are strategically placed in areas in need of quality medical care will offer health-care services to Charlotte residents, including underinsured and uninsured patients.
“I believe that your ZIP code or neighborhood should not determine the quality of your health care — or whether or not you can even get care at all,” stated Jordan.
Earlier in 2017, Jordan had committed $7 million to Novant Health to initiate two health care clinics in Charlotte to help communities struggling to meet basic health care needs. The 6,800 square-foot clinics “ Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinic,” consist of 12 exam rooms, an X-ray room, a physical therapy space, and a full-time social worker. The clinics have been constructed with substantial feedback from the community through forums, meetings, and discussions.
“As you can see, it’s a very emotional thing for me to be able to give back to a community that’s supported me over the years,” stated Jordan with tears on his cheeks at the launch of the clinics.
