McDonald’s, Starbucks, Etc. Gearing Up For ‘Contactless’ Pickup In China

McDonald’s Corporation (MCD) is the leading global foodservice retailer with nearly 37,000 locations in over 100 countries. The Corporation operates and franchises McDonald’s restaurants in the US and across the globe with over 90% of its restaurants owned and operated by local, independent businessmen and women. 

Reportedly, major fast-food companies like McDonald’s, Starbucks and others are encouraging  “contactless” delivery and pick-up services to ensure the safety of its employees and customers from the ongoing Coronavirus outbreak in China. The process allows customers to place online orders and their meals are sealed in bags and put at a special location for pick-up, discouraging human contact. Whereas for delivery orders, meals are dropped at building entrances with delivery personnel carrying their ID cards showing that the food prepared and packed by individuals had their body temperature scanned and were free from the virus.

“While we look at how to further improve the process, the stepped-up preventive measures apply to all of our servicing channels,” McDonald’s stated in a statement to Reuters.

The virus has infected more than 68,500 people globally causing 1,665 death off lately. Reportedly during the epidemic, meal delivery was hit fearing contact among individuals would put everyone at risk of infection.

The initiative by the fast-food chain encourages “contactless delivery” ensuring safety for both employees and customers. Along with McDonald’s and Starbucks, Yum China Holdings Inc also rolled out contactless delivery on Jan. 30, along with contactless pickup coming two days later at its KFC and Pizza Hut locations, as per reports.
