J&J Receiving Pressure From Nonprofits To Discontinue Sales Of Baby Powder

By John F. Heerdink, Jr.

As per a statement from advocacy group Black Women for Wellness, reportedly more than 170 nonprofit groups which include educational institutions such as Emory University and activist groups such as Greenpeace, among others have urged Johnson & Johnson to stop selling its talc-based Johnson’s Baby Powder globally over concerns that it contains cancer-causing asbestos.

Janette Robinson Flint, the executive director of Black Women for Wellness pointed out that J&J’s decision to continue marketing baby powder in international markets, often to Black and Brown consumers, contradicts a statement the company issued in June promising to fight racial inequality.

In May, Johnson & Johnson confirmed that it would stop selling its talc Baby Powder in the United States and Canada due to a fall in demand amid “misinformation” about the product’s safety and a storm of legal challenges. The company desired to continue selling its talc-based products in other markets around the world.

J&J has faced thousands of lawsuits from consumers and their survivors claiming its talc products causes cancer due to the presence of carcinogen in them.
