“Holding Strong” – Vista Partners Daily Recap 1/18/2019

US stocks continued holding strong today, with all three major indices once again reporting gains. The S&P 500 rose 1.32% (34.75 points) by the time trade ended and the Nasdaq was up 1.03% (72.76 points). The Dow started the day with gains and rose throughout until finally ending with an increase of 1.38% (336.38 points).

Individually, components of the Dow were up nearly across the board the today. Home Depot (HD) was the biggest winner with an increase of 2.69%. Caterpillar (CAT) also did well again today as it rose 2.18% by the market’s close. United Health Group (UNH) was another of the companies seeing significant gains with a rise of 2.21%.

Atossa Genetics (ATOS) also did quite well, as it jumped 6.35% for the session.

Several companies continued to release quarterly reports and, as of now, earnings are beating by 1.7%, with 70% of the companies reporting that they outdid their bottom-line estimates. Netflix (NFLX) released its results yesterday & reported that it had beat its earnings but missed its revenue expectations for the fourth quarter. One of the highlights of the report, though, was its growth in the international market as it added 7.3 million new international customers during the fourth quarter and 1.5 million in the United States.
