As per reports, Oil major Exxon Mobil (XOM) Corporation is conducting field trials of eight methane detection technologies along with satellite monitoring in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The project is being carried out in 1,000 sites in Texas and New Mexico along with drones, helicopters, planes, ground-based mobile, and fixed-position sensors.
“We are applying scientific rigor and taking aggressive steps to find commercially scalable and affordable solutions for all operators,” stated Staale Gjervik, senior vice president at ExxonMobil Upstream Oil and Gas Co.
The trials will be used to detect any leaks and identify ways that can be shared with other oil and gas operators, as per reports. A majority of oil and gas companies and trade associations in Texas have formed a coalition to develop and recommend solutions to minimize spread and methane emissions.
