More Slippage In Tuesday’s Markets

We experienced a bit of market slippage without a stimulus package insight again today,  except for a few very large tech names that lifted the Nasdaq. On the macroeconomic front we received a number of mixed reports. The total durable orders report confirmed a rise by 1.9% month/month in September leaving us wit the understanding that business spending continues rebound. However, the Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index report confirmed a fall to 100.9 in October as consumers felt less confident about the short-term. The FHFA Housing Price Index for October rose 1.5% & the S&P Case-Shiller Home Price Index for August moved up by 5.2%.

At the end of the day, the S&P 500 closed at 3,390.68 (-.30%), the Dow 30 closed at 27,463.19 (-.80%) as components Caterpillar (CAT) $157.91/share, (-3.2%) and 3M (MMM) $161.04, (-3.1%) had significantly abad days as they reported and stopped short of providing future guidance Merck (MRK) closed at $77.99/share, -1.1% as they reported and kept their guidance in line. The Russell 2000 also ended at 1,590.71 (-.9%) today. On the positive side of things, the tech heavy Nasdaq closed at 11,431.35 (+.64%) as large tech stocks moved higher the FAANG stocks ended moved higher as follows: Alphabet (GOOG) $1,60.26/share, +.87%, Facebook (FB) $283.29/share,+2.23%, Apple (AAPL) closed at $115.05/share, +.01%, Amazon (AMZN) closed at $3,286.33/share, +2.47%, & Netflix (NFLX) closed at $488.93/share up +.14%.  The Russell 2000 ended at 1,590.71 (-.9%) today.  

The consumer discretionary sector (+.6%), communication services sector (+.6%), and the information technology sector (+.5%) led all sectors in this overall negative day. 

EV manufacturer Tesla (TSLA) closed at $424.68/share up 1.05% & Chinese EV concern NIO Limited, (NIO) closed at $28.44/share up 9.34%. 

Tech firm Xilinx (XLNX) closed at $124.35, +8.6% after they announced that they had agreed to be acquired for an all stock buyout of $35B by Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) ($78.88/share,  -4.1%.)

Precious metals rose today. Gold closed at $1,908(+5) while silver closed at $24.45/oz (+.07). North American silver and gold producer Hecla Mining Company (HL) closed at $5.08/share after recently establishing another new 52-week high of $6.79/share during intraday trading. HL’s 52-week range is $1.40 – $6.79. Barrick Gold Corporation (GOLD) closed at $26.63/share down .67%. 

Oil prices moved higher closing at $39.55/bbl down sharply by 2.5%. Chevron (CVX) closed at $69.51/share down 2.02%. The energy sector dropped 1.4%.

The 2-yr US treasury yield closed down a point .15% while the 10-yr yield dropped 2 basis points at .78%. The U.S. Dollar Index weakened closing at 92.96.

    • Atossa Therapeutics, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATOS), a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company seeking to discover and develop innovative medicines in areas of significant unmet medical need with a current focus on breast cancer and COVID-19, recently announced it has now completed enrollment in its Phase 1 clinical study using Atossa’s proprietary drug candidate AT-301 administered by nasal spray. “Completing enrollment is a significant milestone and comes at a time when we are seeing a new wave if infections in certain geographies and an increased focus on developing therapies to treat COVID-19,” commented Steven Quay, M.D., Ph.D., Atossa’s President and CEO. “While the virus presents significant danger overall, the vast majority of people testing positive for COVID-19 do not require hospitalization and instead quarantine at home while they manage their symptoms and attempt not to infect those around them.   • Fate Therapeutics, Inc. (FATE) closed at $47.46/share +1.19% today. 

    • Fate is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company dedicated to the development of programmed cellular immunotherapies for cancer and immune disorders.

    • On October 15th, FATE announced that five abstracts for the Company’s induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) product platform were accepted for presentation at the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC) annual meeting being held virtually from November 9-14, 2020. Learn more. 

  • Shares of NeuBase Therapeutics (NBSE) closed at $8.62/share +2.62% after recently reaching a new 52-week high recently of $11.78/share.
