Boeing Employs Pilots To Assist The Return Of Grounded 737 Max

By John F. Heerdink, Jr.

As per reports, Boeing (BA) has hired 160 pilots to be placed at airlines in a bid to help the grounded 737 Max to return to smooth service. The “Global Engagement Pilots” to act as cockpit observers or instructors on a 35-day assignment is a part of a broader program to support customers on all Boeing commercial models.

Reportedly, the pilots will be paid an equivalent annual salary that could reach $200,000, for a total potential cost of $32m. Pilots in the program need to hold 1,000 hours of instructor experience with “no incidents, accidents, losses or violations,” and be licensed on the 737 and other Boeing jetliners.

“We continue to work closely with global regulators and customers to safely return the 737-8 and 737-9 to service worldwide,” Boeing stated to BBC.

The move also includes 24/7 surveillance of 737 Max flights globally and talking points for flight attendants to reassure passengers.

Last month the Federal Aviation Administration lifted the ban on aircraft. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency is yet to give clearance to the aircraft to return to operations but the same is expected in January. A quick and assured return to service is important for Boeing, which announced its fourth straight quarterly loss in October and increasing job cuts.
