Boeing 737 Likely To Return To Service By Year End: Regulator EASA

By John F. Heerdink, Jr.

As per a Bloomberg report, Patrick Ky, executive director of the European Union Aviation Safety Agency has informed that Boeing 737 Max is safe to fly again before the end of the year. He further informed that the agency is reviewing the final documents before it issues an airworthiness directive by next month.

EASA is the first global regulator to give a timeline on when the jet might return to service. The other governing bodies like the Federal Aviation Administration and Transport Canada have completed recertification flights this summer and are reviewing the data.

“Our analysis is showing that this is safe, and the level of safety reached is high enough for us,” stated Ky in the interview.

However, the Boeing 737 Max is still missing a key device that EASA wants to be installed, it would simplify pilots’ reactions when one or both angle-of-attack sensors on the 737 Max fails. Boeing is set to install it in the 737 Max 10 before the launch in 2022. The smaller 737 Max models will have the sensor retrofitted once it is complete in 20-24 months.
