Amazon, Exxon Among 700 Companies Under Scrutiny Regarding Carbon Disclosure Project Compliance

By John F. Heerdink, Jr.
Reportedly, 700 companies including Amazon, Exxon & Volvo are been questioned on their climatic transparency by environmental groups consisting of investors and interested observers. HSBC Global Asset Management, Investec Asset Management and other 85 investors with combined assets of $10 trillion are demanding companies who have failed to disclose the information to comply with Carbon Disclosure Project, a British nonprofit research group monitoring and managing environmental disclosure by corporates. Emily Kreps, global director of investor initiatives at CDP informed the investors and interested observers require “consistent, comparable information collected in one place so that they can benchmark performance and use the data to inform their decisions,” ExxonMobil has been under scrutiny for a number of lawsuits for the climatic global crisis. The fuel giant confirmed it follows and updates environmental information through the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures. It further stated, “we no longer participate in the Carbon Disclosure Project survey because our publicly available material provides a comprehensive and meaningful perspective on how we view and approach climate change-related risks.” Amazon expressed it has goals to reach “50% of all Amazon shipments with net zero carbon by 2030”. HSBC, Investec, and Volvo remained unavailable for comment.
